
Job Description
Virgin Galactic (VG) is seeking a propulsion technician with a background in rocket propulsion systems, preferably with hybrid or liquid propulsion. Ideally the individual will have a background in propulsion testing and/or flight operations. Experience with typical rocket propellants (LOX, Hypergols, Hydrogen, solids, cryogens, etc.) is a strong plus. This is a full-time position at Virgin Galactic’s aerospace facility in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
Responsibilities
- Works independently to perform rocket motor build up/tear down maintenance activities that entails instrumentation, ignition system, and mechanical systems removal/installations
- Inspects, dismantles, adjusts, overhauls, repairs, fabricates, and assembles applicable Spaceship flight hardware/propulsion system components and/or assemblies in support of flight operations and associated ground test events
- Basic clean room practices and processes for cleaning flight hardware components
- Operate propulsion ground support pressure systems during Spaceship propellant loading operations
- Perform pressure system panel buildup and modification tasks for propulsion ground support systems
- Performs tubing and metalwork fabrication tasks, machine tool work and/or composite work in conjunction with the above technician work
- Utilizes expertise to develop component maintenance manuals procedures and work instructions, applicable to the defined work scope
- Utilizes expertise to provide training program definition with direct input of hands-on knowledge from the propulsion system via different mediums as appropriate
- Independently assess workmanship and sign-off required documentation
- Develop and refine operational procedures for propellant/cryogens/pressurized gases loading
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and protocols, conducting regular inspections and risk assessments, and implementation of PPE to maintain a safe working environment
Required Skills and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 4+ years of propulsion systems testing or spaceship operations
- Knowledge of high-pressure system components, connection types, fittings, etc.
- Must be familiar with procedures applicable to the various phases of maintenance, minimum 3 years of experience
- Ability to drive heavy equipment and obtain a Commercial Driver’s License
- Experience with control systems and electronics (to include wiring and build-up of systems)
- Able to independently work under pressure and in a fast-paced environment
- Able to travel to different company sites in support of training and/or operations
- Ability to pass the background check to obtain a US airport AOA and/or NMSA spaceport badge
- Self-starter that begins, executes, and completes tasks with little to no supervision
- Good communication skills
- Willing to work in a hazardous environment with high energetic materials
- Eligibility to apply for ATF Employee Possessor permit to handle energetic materials
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Preferred Skills and Experience
- Graduated from a technical college or other recognized apprenticeship
- 5 + years of experience working with high pressure fluids & gaseous systems
- Experience with rocket systems and associated solid, liquid propellants and cryogens
- Experience with composite structures (commercial or military aerospace applications)
- Commercial Driver’s License
- Forklift operator
- FAA approved Airframe and Powerplant license (A&P License)
Physical and/or Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work all shifts and available for overtime as well as weekends when needed
- Must be able to stand for extended periods – 9 hours minimum
- Must be able to stoop, bend, crawl, and maneuver in tight spaces – 3 hours minimum
- Must be able to work in extreme environments (low/high temperatures, windy, noisy)
- Physically able to handle items weighing up to 50 pounds (unassisted)
