Job Description

Virgin Galactic is seeking a talented and motivated Specialist Engineer/Analyst to join our team. Guided by our values, “Safety Above All”, we proactively manage the risks inherent in human spaceflight through our daily actions in the design and assembly efforts. You will bring your talent and experience in Product Safety with Aerospace or other technically demanding industries and will play a key role as a mentor to junior engineers as well as a project focal to other teams throughout the organization.

 

Responsibilities

  • Works with project engineering to develop Design and Operations Maintainability and Safety artifacts for new and existing designs. 
  • Performs analysis and/or assessments in either or both major safety areas below:
    • System Safety Analysis (SSA)
      • Fault Tree Analysis (FTA)
      • Functional Hazard Assessment (FHA)
      • Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA)
      • Risk identification, prioritization, and management
    • Maintainability
      • Design for Maintainability and Safety
      • MSG-3 Support
      • Build and Operations Inspection Support and Assessments
      • Maintenance Engineering Support for Build, Test, and Operations 
  • Provides support and risk advice to production, maintenance, technical, project or program personnel based on joint Reliability and Safety metrics.
  • Acts as Technical lead of Reliability for Safety, supporting program planning and technical execution of Reliability analyses and deliverables.
  • Reports to Engineering Manager, Product Safety on progress and status of Safety and Maintainability deliverables.

 

Required Skills and Experience

  • Requires a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in aerospace or similar field with a bachelor’s degree; or 8 years and a master’s degree.
  • Experience with Systems Engineering development lifecycles.
  • Must have experience with fault tree modeling software.
  • Hands-on experience in maintenance and maintenance engineering practices preferred.
  • Experience with software development practices and design assurance methods such as DO-178 or ARP4754 preferred.
  • Experience with electronic hardware design assurance methods such as DO-254 preferred.
  • Experience with Built-In-Test and its application to Reliability, Maintainability & Safety (RM&S) preferred.
  • Detailed knowledge of the inputs and outputs of the various RM&S analysis techniques
  • Experience with the system safety methods of ARP4761 or MIL-STD-882, with emphasis on hazard mitigation processes
  • Experience modeling system and vehicle level reliability by assessing board-level failure modes.
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical engineering drawings, to include schematics, wiring diagrams and assembly drawings.
  • Applicants must be U.S. persons as defined by the ITAR (22 CFR §120.15)

 

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • 8 or more years of relevant experience in aerospace or similar field.
  • Leadership skills with experience creating, defining, and executing technical analysis plans
  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and written communication skills
  • Team player with excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision, adaptable to changing environments, and able to handle multiple tasks and/or projects simultaneously.

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time position is $136,063.00–$207,596.00. The base pay actually offered will vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, location, and experience and take into account internal equity. Other forms of pay (e.g., bonus or long term incentive) may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits, dependent on the position offered.
