Thermo-Mechanical Analyst

Job Description

We are looking for a Thermal and mechanical Analyst and Designer for Satellite. The candidate shall operate inside an integrated team that works on different disciplines: thermal design, structure design and propulsion subsystems. He shall interface with internal and external customers, therefore he shall have peculiar communication skills, pro-active attitude in facing and solving problems and inclination to team working.

In the frame of Mechanical, Thermal and Propulsion Engineering Department, the candidate will have the following main tasks in thermal and mechanical engineering area:

  • Thermal interface requirements definition and management towards subsystem and equipment;
  • Design: starting from the Satellite general configuration (CAD layout) to define the thermal design solution: select the best thermal HW for each environment, finding the optimized compromise between performances and mass/integration/cost requirements;
  • Analysis: from the CAD layout to prepare GMM/TMM models and perform the relevant sizing thermal analysis in steady-state conditions and transient using ESATAN-TMS.
  • Thermal HW selection and procurement follow on also in a strict collaboration with production department
  • Verification: perform the Test prediction, participate to Test activities and perform correlation of GMM/TMM based on Test results.
  • Management: manage the different aspects of the technical solution (qualification, costs, schedule) finding the most convenient way out for potential obstacles.
  • Select and procure thermal HW in compliance with QA and PA requirement
  • Mechanical: starting from the part/assembly functional description, perform the process of designing an item including up-to-date optimization criteria;
  • Starting from an optimized solution in CAD layout (CATIA V5 mainly) preparation of FEM mesh of parts and assemblies respecting the golden rules of FEM modelling and embracing static and dynamic analysis;
  • to run the above FEM models to get displacements, accelerations, loads and stresses data either at the interfaces and internally, as needed;
  • performing of pre-post solving operations on the models and relevant analyses data;
  • post-processing of results including Margin of Safety calculation as required;
  • Synthetize and document the performed activities generating in autonomy the relevant outputs;

Education & Qualifications

  • Master Degree in Aerospace Engineering.
  • English language knowledge written and spoken.

Experience and skills

An experience in the aerospace field is required even in academic environment (coordination of academic projects).

Previous experience in Thermal modelling of structure and thermal HW is a key point.

Knowledge of satellite configuration at system level is also a key point.

Knowledge of latest innovative thermal solution (thermal fins, responsive systems, HP, variable emissivity solutions) is a plus.

Knowledge of metamaterial characteristics in view of potential application in the space systems field is a plus.

The following software skills are recommended:

  • Good knowledge of ESATAN-TMS;
  • preliminary knowledge of pre\post-processing software:
  • MATLAB;
  • PATRAN;
  • NASTRAN;
  • ANSYS MEC APDL;
  • COMSOL multiphysics;
  • AUTOCAD as basis for Thermal Desktop Sinda Fluint.
  • experienced (good) knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Interest and experience in Additive Manufacturing technology and its injection into the parts design is key while practical experience in the process, with:

  • knowledge of A.M. machines, processes and materials is highly appreciated;
  • experience of managing A.M. Print Services is highly appreciated;
