In Amsterdam we deliver a wide range of engineering solutions to the Land Forces in order to support them in their communication and situational awareness needs. One of the key subsystems is SOTAS, providing Voice communication and IT infrastructure inside a Military vehicle. From standard product we provide customer specific solutions including the evidence of compliance to the customer requirements
For the SOTAS Hardware Engineering Team, Thales (Amsterdam) is looking for a talented
Product Safety Engineer / Electronic Safety Engineer
You will be a member of multidisciplinary teams of hardware (electronics, mechanics), test engineers and specialists who work together on the development of new communications products. These teams work together with internal departments and external companies for the realization of our products, often in an international environment. Most projects can be characterized as highly innovative and do have a high technological level.
About your future job
As a Product Safety Engineer, you are responsible for ensuring the safety of our SOTAS products and testtools: from concept and design to validation and certification. You conduct systematic safety analyses and translate regulatory requirements into concrete design and verification activities.
You work closely with system, hardware, and software engineers, project management, and compliance specialists to ensure that products are proven compliant with international standards and customer-specific safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and maintain safety dossiers
Apply safety engineering in accordance with MIL-STD-882
Translate normative requirements (including EN IEC 62368-1 and IEC 61010) into design rules and verification criteria
Coordinate internal and external safety reviews and assessments processes where applicable
Support verification and validation activities (testing, inspections, compliance checks)
Advise design teams on risk reduction and safe architectural choices
Act as the point of contact for safety towards customers, certifying bodies, and stakeholders
Analyse and assess design documentation on it’s safety aspects and identify and classify all potential energy sources and possible risks they may pose.
Communicating any safety issue gathered by analysis and assessment with the design team and the Project Safety Manager to work towards a mitigation of the risk that issue might present.
Creating a comprehensive formal document that will be used to substantiate the safety compliance claim, based on a chosen Safety Standard that includes an extensive checklist, analysis and test results.
Performing safety tests to provide evidence to support the compliance documentation.
Monitoring the progress of the “safety solution” of a design by participating in design team meetings, performing technical design reviews and organizing special safety related sessions.
Standards Framework (experience or affinity with):
EN IEC 62368-1 (Audio/video, information and communication technology equipment)
EC 61010 (Measurement, control, and laboratory equipment)
MIL-STD-882 (System Safety)
About you
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, Mechatronics, or equivalent
experience with product safety engineering
Strong knowledge of risk management and safety lifecycle processes
Experience with multidisciplinary development teams
Structured working approach and strong documentation skills
Proactive, independent attitude with eye for detail and pragmatic solutions
The ability to look at a product/design from a perspective that identifies possible risks, to intended users or the environment, that may result from design choices made with primarily functionality in mind.
NOTE: Security Requirements
European citizenship and passport are both required. Non-EU nationality and/or passport are not eligible in accordance with the requirements imposed by the military.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in high-reliability environments (defense, industry, medical, or mission-critical systems)
Familiarity with compliance processes and certification
Experience with requirement management tools (e.g., Polarion)
Familiarity with Hazard Based Safety Engineering
