Algorithm Engineer (Radar and Electronic Warfare)

Crawley – Hybrid (Relocation support can be provided)

Thales Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) UK is a principal supplier of Electronic Warfare (EW), Radar and Uncrewed Aerial Systems (UAS) equipment to the UK armed forces, as well as an exporter of these capabilities worldwide.

We’re growing and we are looking for an ambitious Algorithm Engineer to join us on the journey. Algorithm Engineers design, implement and improve algorithms used in critical systems such as Radars and Digital Radar Electronic Support Measures (RESM). We are looking for a highly qualified STEM individual who can take a high-level technical need and justify innovative solutions by theory and/or experiment.

Key Responsibilities:

As an Algorithm Engineer, you will:

  • Perform algorithm engineering for Sensor and Waveform signal processing
  • Select and adapt algorithmic solutions
  • Develop models of performance and physical phenomena
  • Provide support to the software and firmware implementation teams and to the system validation team
  • Undertake mathematical analysis of sensor data
  • Generate requirements and acceptance criteria

Experience and skillset required of the successful candidate:

  • Bachelor degree in Applied Science, Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, or related field with practical experience
  • Algorithm design
  • Experience with high level mathematical languages such as Matlab / Python / Simulink
  • High level competency in mathematics including digital signal processing, stochastic processes and linear algebra
  • Able to analyse in a critical and constructive way systems/equipment needs to determine potential issues and write specification documents
  • Able to work independently in a supportive team environment
  • Able to solve complex problems in a challenging domain 
  • A deep understanding of the Electromagnetic spectrum, how it is captured and processed in a digital form
  • A good problem solver showing initiative and improvisation, able to challenge established processes where appropriate and offer innovative alternatives
  • Demonstrates attention to detail, particularly in investigating problems, and a pride in producing accurate work

Desirable but not essential:

  • Experience working in Electronic Warfare or Radar domains

Security Clearance statement  

Due to the nature of the work that we do at Thales, many of our roles are subject to security restrictions. This role requires you to be a sole British National from birth and achieve Security Clearance (SC) without any caveats. It would be advantageous if currently held, however, if not currently held, it is a requirement that the successful applicant undergo, achieve, and maintain SC Clearance prior to commencing employment. Please visit the UKSV website for further guidance- United Kingdom Security Vetting - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

To be eligible for full SC, you generally need to have resided in the UK for the last 5 years. In some circumstances, a minimum of 3 years’ residence in the UK over the last 5 years may be accepted, with additional overseas checks.
