JOB DESCRIPTION – EQUIPMENT DESIGN ENGINEER 
  
The management of tools required for production or assembly of parts involves the following main activities: 
  
Design (to be carried out in accordance with the criteria defined by the individual method engineers or CNC programmers for the specific work operation); 
Procurement (preparation of Purchase Requests and monitoring of Orders and Suppliers if the tool is manufactured or modified externally); 
Construction (generally at external suppliers, but also in-house for small modifications). 
  
The Equipment Design Engineer has the following responsibilities: 
  
Designing new tools required for machining and assembly of parts, based on operating cycles or instructions from method engineers, applicable drawings and specifications (tools for CNC machines such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, grinders, gear cutting machines, and for thermal or galvanic treatment plants; tools for dimensional inspection, NDT processes, assembly, material handling) 
Updating or redesigning existing tools in relation to technical-design changes in the part to be machined, changes to the operating cycle, production needs, technological improvements, etc. 
Creating detailed design studies in case the detailed development of the tool design is subcontracted externally 
Monitoring and supporting the design of tools whose drawings are developed externally 
Developing and maintaining design standards and shop norms (NOA) 
Determining the allocation of internal vs. external design work, with the aim of meeting priority objectives and minimizing cost 
Defining time schedules and supporting external design, in alignment with the programming set by the Tool Management Manager and according to efficiency and economic principles 
Interacting with external designers, Heads of Technological Areas, and colleagues assigned to Production Support to analyze defects or production issues directly related to tools 
Verifying the correctness of drawings produced by external design firms 
Ensuring technical consistency/uniformity in tool design both in-house and externally 
Technically validating tool projects when design is outsourced 
Verifying and validating cost estimates based on the drawing of the tool to be procured 
Issuing Purchase Requests to Procurement for tools to be procured 
Monitoring the status of order issuance and deliveries of tools, reporting any delays to one’s own Manager and to the Engineering Manager 
Maintaining contacts with tool suppliers and, if necessary, establishing contacts with equipment designers 
Ability to estimate cost quotes both for design and manufacturing phases of tools 
Ability to interface with workshop personnel (operators, team leads, department heads), tool suppliers, and procurement 
Development of KAIZEN initiatives to identify root causes of product defects and concurrently develop technical/managerial/production solutions to eliminate such defect sources 
  
REQUIREMENTS 
  
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Technical Diploma in Mechanics with prior experience in production environments (preferably three years of experience if graduated, or five years if diploma holder)Knowledge of CAD design software (preferably CATIA V5) 
Understanding of mechanical processes and related production processes (including inspection/quality processes)Aptitude for working in a production environment 
Proactivity and determination in achieving objectives 
Problem solving skills

Ability to coordinate projects or programs involving people from different departments
