The Tool Engineer is responsible for the concept, design, analysis, documentation, fabrication support, and inspection of tooling and equipment used in aerospace manufacturing. This role works closely with manufacturing, operations, vendors, and cross-functional engineering teams to ensure tooling meets quality, cost, schedule, and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop tooling concepts and support equipment for new and existing programs
- Design tooling and equipment, including engineering drawings, inspection requirements, and verification plans
- Work closely with Tool Designers to create and finalize drawings
- Review designs for manufacturability, fit, form, and function
- Manage tooling projects, including cost, schedule, procurement, and fabrication
- Interface with internal customers and design review teams to ensure requirements are met
- Support vendors during fabrication and inspect fabricated tooling for drawing compliance
- Collaborate with manufacturing, operations, and process engineering to support program quality, delivery, and cost objectives
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and proactive problem-solving Safety, Process, and Compliance
- Design safe and efficient tooling layouts and manufacturing processes
- Identify and mitigate safety risks in accordance with company and state/government standards
- Support investigations related to root cause analysis, non-conformances, and process failures
This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80. The 9/80 schedule allows employees who work a nine-hour day Monday through Thursday to take every other Friday off.
Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in a STEM discipline with 2 years of technical experience in engineering, design, and fabrication of special tooling and related equipment experience OR Master of Science in STEM with 0 years experience
Experience in engineering, design, and fabrication of special tooling and support equipment
NX modeling experience
Proactive mindset focused on continuous improvement
Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD Secret or Top Secret Clearance as well as Program Special access within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability to evaluate vendor capabilities for tooling and aerospace part production
Excellent organizational and project management skills
Experience with stress analysis and finite element analysis (FEA)
