The Machinist is responsible for an assigned major experimental, developmental, or other project which requires the planning, layout, set-up, and operation of all types of machine tools to perform laboratory machining operations requiring a high level of skill and job knowledge. Plans, constructs, modifies, repairs, and maintains high-precision and complex tools, jigs, and fixtures of unusual design.
This position's internal job code is Machinist . Our team is currently hiring for Grade 24.
Position Responsibilities:
• Works from oral and written instructions, engineering drawings, and rough sketches where normal operating assignments involve a general outline of an experimental or developmental project and in which a full complement of machine tools must be utilized to complete the assignment
• Analyzes requirements of the entire project, including sources of information for material, operations, tolerance requirements, and construction procedures. Plans sequence of operations, machines to be used, and the most economical method to execute work efficiently
• Sets up and operates tool room and grinding machines, including mounting machine attachments, grinding, and setting tools to establish operating procedures
• Plans sequence of operations and methods to completely lay out and set up work for the entire project, including temporary tooling and production aids, utilizing knowledge of finishes and machining characteristics of plastics and metals and machine shop theory
• Lays out complex parts, performs necessary calculations using shop mathematics including geometry and trigonometry, establishes dimensions or suitable configurations when not specified, and checks work using precision measuring instruments
• Checks completed details for tolerance and quality requirements
• Assembles components by fitting, filing, grinding, lapping, and honing; tests completed assemblies, analyzes and corrects operating issues, and suggests improvements in construction and operations
• May assist personnel in related job classifications
• Works with supervision and engineering personnel on design considerations, heat treating, material selection, and development of methods or procedures.
• Performs rework of similar complexity as described above
• Performs incidental related duties as assigned or required
This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.
Security Clearance and Export Control Requirements:
This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a “US Person” as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. “US Person” includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
Minimum of 5 years of machinist experience
High School Diploma
Experience with lathes, mills, grinders, and CNC machines
Knowledge of cutting tools, materials, and machining processes
CNC programming experience (writing or editing programs)
Proficiency in reading technical drawings and blueprints
Experience using precision measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges) and understanding tolerances
Basic math skills (algebra, geometry, and machining calculations)
Preferred Qualifications
10+ years of machining experience
Experience machining aerospace components/products
Familiarity with CAD/CAM software
Ability to troubleshoot issues and improve machining efficiency
Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills

This is an hourly position governed by the Cabinet Makers, Millmen and Industrial Carpenters Union (CMM&IC Local 721)
The selected candidate must be able to work any shift, as assigned.
New hires and employees transferring from non-union roles may be required to attend or complete training within their 90-day probationary period. Continued employment is contingent on successfully completing the probationary period.

This role is primarily first shift; however, there may be additional shift requirements to support program objectives
