Founding Product Engineer
Job Description
You will build an interface that has never been built before.
We were the first to deploy computer-use agents to healthcare. We process thousands of mission-critical browser agent executions per day automating tasks like updating patient records, insurance quoting, and more.
To teach and supervise these agents, you need to invent new design paradigms. What's the most important information to show a human so they can give the highest-signal feedback that propagates directly into agent instructions? This goes far beyond chat windows and browser recordings. You're designing what it means to supervise an agent workforce at scale across complex, exception-heavy workflows.
AGI is here. AI can build anything. The hard part is deciding what to build, how it should feel, and what to leave out. We believe taste and thoughtful design won't go away after singularity. They become more important. We need someone who gets that.
Why This Role Exists
Our team is world-class at AI, backend, and infrastructure engineering. What we're missing is a product-obsessed builder with taste who can own the entire user experience, from first visit to daily use. Our platform is growing fast, and the interface needs to match the quality of the technology behind it.
This is a greenfield ownership role. You won't be maintaining someone else's design system. You'll be creating ours.
What You'll Own
- Platform UX & Design System. Own Asteroid platform UX end-to-end. Build a unified, beautiful design system. Ship core frontend features. Review PostHog recordings, run user interviews, and relentlessly improve the experience.
- User Onboarding & Adoption. Make the product so intuitive that users don't need hand-holding. Reduce support load by shipping better product.
- Full-stack engineering. When a feature needs building end-to-end, you build it.
- Website. Own asteroid.ai. Keep it current, beautiful and optimized for GEO/SEO.
What You'll Contribute To
- Customer relationships. Be the account manager for a handful of customers. Understand their pain firsthand.
- Product launches. Landing pages, launch content, getting the product ready for the spotlight.
This Role Is for You If
- You want complete ownership over greenfield product and design engineering, from user research to shipped frontend.
- You have taste and can back it up with solid UX principles.
- You take pride in building elegant, scalable software.
- You want to be surrounded by a team that thrives on shipping and solving hard technical problems.
- You've built products and interfaces from scratch with real users. You see around the corner and build for what's next.
- You think about what good and bad futures look like in a world where AI agents automate large parts of the economy.
Qualifications
- Proven experience building and shipping products used by thousands of weekly active users, ideally B2B.
- Ability to translate customer feedback into specific, high-impact platform improvements.
- Full-stack engineering capability. In the age of AI, you don't stop at the frontend.
- Incredible taste. A perfectionist who knows when to ship.
- Self-motivated, hard-working, and extremely AI-native.
Nice to Have
- Design background (Figma fluency, visual design chops).
- Strong AI engineering skills.
- PM-like instincts. You can run a roadmap, not just execute on one.
- Experience managing customer accounts directly.
Tech Stack
We don't prescribe your tools. Our core platform is built on:
- Core: Go, TypeScript, Playwright
- AI: OpenAI, Anthropic, Computer Use
- Infra: GCP, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform
Interview Process
- 20-min intro call with David (CEO)
- 2-hour take-home. Explore our platform, build agents, identify the biggest UX issues, and show us how you'd make it better. Output can be a redesigned page, a new Figma design system, a Notion doc with annotated mocks. Whatever shows your product vision.
- 30-min deep dive with Joe (CTO) or David (CEO)
- 1–3 week paid contract-to-hire. Full-time or part-time depending on your circumstances. Work alongside the full team in SF, ideally in person.
