At Magic Leap, you can explore innovative solutions and use your talents to solve real-world problems. Working alongside industry experts, you can grow your skills while helping make our technology available to millions of people as a partner in the AR ecosystem. We know that successful change and progress accelerates diverse perspectives. As we shape our future, everyone's voice matters. Together, we can reimagine the world of work and, with our bold partners, make the impossible possible.

The opportunity

The Staff R&D Process Engineer will play a critical role in developing and scaling advanced manufacturing processes for next-generation AR eyepiece technologies, with a primary focus on laser processing and singulation of glass and glass-like substrates. This position sits at the intersection of research and development and high-volume manufacturing.

You will own process development from early-stage exploration through production ramp, solving complex challenges in precision, yield, and scalability. This role is ideal for someone who is highly hands-on, thrives in ambiguity, and enjoys building processes that transition from lab to manufacturing.

What you’ll do

  • Own the development of laser-based processes for cutting, shaping, and finishing glass and glass-like substrates used in AR waveguides.
  • Design and execute experiments (DOEs) to solve process challenges related to edge strength, yield, and dimensional precision.
  • Program, set up, and operate laser and precision fabrication tools to produce high-quality prototypes.
  • Develop metrology methods, fixtures, and validation workflows to ensure process performance and repeatability.
  • Troubleshoot and optimize processes to improve yield, throughput, and consistency.
  • Partner with manufacturing teams to transfer processes into high-volume production and support ramp.
  • Evaluate, select, and bring up new tools and technologies, including next-generation laser systems.
  • Create and maintain process documentation, specifications, and reports.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, manufacturing, and external partners in a fast-paced environment.

The experience you bring

  • 8+ years of relevant industry experience in process engineering, advanced manufacturing, or related fields.
  • BS or MS in engineering (mechanical, materials, optical, manufacturing, or related field), or PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience developing or running laser-based processes (e.g., laser cutting, dicing, micromachining).
  • Hands-on experience working with precision materials, ideally glass or brittle substrates (ceramics or similar materials also relevant).
  • Strong background in process development within an R&D environment, including designing and executing DOEs.
  • Experience operating and or programming fabrication tools and equipment (manual, semi-automated, or automated).
  • Working knowledge of CAD tools (2D or 3D; Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.).
  • Ability to analyze data and make data-driven process decisions.
  • Adaptability and comfort working in a dynamic, fast-changing environment.

It’s exciting if you also have

  • Direct experience with laser singulation or dicing of glass or glass-like materials.
  • Deep understanding of laser-material interactions, especially with glass and glass-like materials.
  • Experience scaling processes from prototype to high-volume manufacturing.
  • Experience working in cleanroom environments and handling precision components.
  • Familiarity with metrology tools (CMM, optical microscopy, interferometry, etc.).
  • CNC programming and machining experience.
  • Experience with statistical analysis tools (e.g., JMP or similar).
  • Background in semiconductor, optics, AR/VR, or advanced consumer hardware manufacturing.

Additional Requirements

  • Onsite, 5 days per week
  • Work environment includes significant time in a cleanroom setting (bunny suit required)
