Vast is looking for a second shift NDE Level II Inspector, reporting to the Supervisor, NDE, to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations. Use this space to describe the role and sell the candidate on the cool stuff they would get to work on.
This will be a full-time, non-exempt position located in our Long Beach location.
Responsibilities:
- Perform eddy current and eddy current array (ECA) inspections on aerospace components, welds, and assemblies to detect cracks, corrosion, and other surface or near-surface defects
- Calibrate, configure, and operate ECA systems, ensuring accurate scanning, data acquisition, and interpretation
- Analyze ET and ECA inspection data in accordance with applicable codes (NAS-410, ASTM, ASME) and company procedures
- Perform Dye Penetrant (PT) and Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) inspections as needed to support cross-method validation and coverage
- Generate detailed inspection reports and maintain traceable records for each inspection
- Collaborate with engineering, production, and quality teams to resolve findings and support continuous improvement
- Assist in writing, updating, and qualifying ET, PT, and UTT inspection procedures and techniques
- Train or mentor junior inspectors and participate in cross-training across NDE disciplines
- Promote a strong safety culture, including compliance with personal protective equipment (PPE), radiological safety, and procedural discipline
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree preferred
- Current Level II certification in Eddy Current Testing (ET), Dye Penetrant (PT), Visual Testing (VT) and Ultrasonic Thickness Testing (UTT) in accordance with ASNT TC-1A, NAS-410, or equivalent
- 3–5 years of hands-on experience in aerospace or advanced manufacturing environments
- Demonstrated experience using Eddy Current Array (ECA) systems, probes, and software platforms (e.g., Olympus, Zetec)
- Solid knowledge of ET and ECA theory, probe design, material properties, and signal interpretation
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and digital inspection tools for reporting and analysis
- Strong interpersonal, documentation, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently or as part of a collaborative inspection team
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Additional Level II certifications in UT, RT, VT, MT, or DR methods
- Experience performing ET and ECA on weldments, fastener holes, or heat-affected zones
- Background in inspecting advanced aerospace materials such as titanium, Inconel, maraging steel, and high-strength aluminum alloys
- Familiarity with NASA 5009, AMS, AWS/ASME, and ASTM standards
- Understanding of problem-solving methodologies (8D, PPS) and Lean principles (5S, Kaizen)
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) is a plus
Additional Requirements:
- Willingness to work overtime, or weekends to support critical mission milestones
- Ability to lift up to 25 lbs unassisted
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time, climbing up and down ladders, bending, grasping, sitting, pulling, pushing, stooping, and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position
