Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Leader

The primary purpose of this position is to troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, modify, maintain and exercise technical leadership over subordinate workers in accomplishing trades and labor work in the Fire Truck/Refueling Maintenance Sections of the Vehicle Maintenance Flight.
$37.28 to $43.51 Per Hour

- Performs heavy mobile equipment mechanic work including troubleshooting malfunctions, determining the type and extent of repair required, repairing and maintaining equipment including 60,000 (60K) pound capacity aircraft platform loading deck cargo loaders, bulldozers, power shovels, road graders, mobile cranes, heavy combat equipment, missile transporters, crash/structural firefighting equipment and aircraft/ground products refueling equipment
- Performs work direction and planning.
- Performs administrative duties.
- Ensures education in, compliance with, and practice of security directives, good safety, and health habits in all work areas.

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WL-5800 Transportation/Mobile Equipment Maintenance Group. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC LEADER without more than normal supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1.Knowledge of a wide range of principles, processes, methods, and techniques of heavy mobile equipment and automotive mechanic work.
2.Knowledge of the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, equipment, and precision measuring and /or test equipment common to trades under direction.
3.Ability to interpret and apply manufacturer's repair manuals, technical specifications, schematics, safety manuals and similar guides sufficient to effectively maintain, repair, overhaul and tear down/rebuild equipment components and systems.
4.Knowledge of safety practices, procedures and environmental directives pertaining to handling hazardous materials
5.Ability to plan, organize, and direct functions to include mentoring, motivating, and directing of subordinates.
6.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and provides training to others and maintains records.
Physical Effort:
Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing and crouching. Works in tight and confined compartments, performing strenuous work while in cramped or awkward positions. Frequently lifts and carries items, unassisted, weighing in excess of 40 pounds, and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies and equipment. Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists and cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.
Working Conditions:
Works both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise that is difficult to talk above. When outside, is exposed to inclement weather conditions. Worker is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, heat and fumes. Worker is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock and other relative injuries. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses PPE and safety equipment such as ear devices, hard hats, steel-toe shoes, gloves, respirators and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and must be worn for long periods of time.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
