Job Description
Thales is a global technology leader trusted by governments, institutions, and enterprises to tackle their most demanding challenges. From quantum applications and artificial intelligence to cybersecurity and 6G innovation, our solutions empower critical decisions rooted in human intelligence. Operating at the forefront of aerospace and space, cybersecurity and digital identity, we’re driven by a mission to build a future we can all trust.
In Singapore, Thales has been a trusted partner since 1973, originally focused on aerospace activities in the Asia-Pacific region. With 2,000 employees across three local sites, we deliver cutting-edge solutions across aerospace (including air traffic management), defence and security, and digital identity and cybersecurity sectors. Together, we’re shaping the future by enabling customers to make pivotal decisions that safeguard communities and power progress.
Responsibilities
Concept and stakeholder alignment
- Work with product owners, developers, data scientists, CAAS (Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore) stakeholders, air traffic controllers, regional ANSPs (Air Navigation Service Providers) and other aviation stakeholders to understand concept objectives, user needs and domain workflows.
- Translate complex Air Traffic Management concepts into clear user journeys, information architecture, UI visual design, interaction behaviours, prototypes and user interface specifications.
- Support user story refinement by clarifying workflow dependencies, design constraints, acceptance criteria and expected user interface behaviour.
Prototype and interface design
- Design dense prototype interfaces involving maps, flight data, trajectory data, simulations, dashboards, analytics, constraints, weather, statuses, alerts and other data-heavy aviation use cases.
- Create and maintain design artefacts using design software such as Figma, including wireframes, high-fidelity designs, prototypes, annotations and developer handover specifications.
- Contribute to or help define lab-specific design patterns and Design System direction focused on dense Air Traffic Management prototype interfaces across multiple applications.
Developer collaboration and implementation validation
- Work closely with developers across multiple teams through UI mock-up handovers, requirement clarification, design iterations, implementation review, interaction validation and issue resolution.
- Create clear design handovers for developers, including interaction behaviour, UI states, edge cases and expected workflow logic.
- Review implemented features and developer-generated or AI-generated interfaces to ensure they remain usable, consistent and aligned with the intended workflow.
Stakeholder communication and supporting materials
- Present, justify and refine design decisions with technical teams, CAAS stakeholders, air traffic controllers, regional aviation stakeholders and management.
- Support user documentation, user guides, training materials, workshop outputs and stakeholder-facing presentations where interface clarity or workflow explanation is required.
REQUIREMENTS:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in UI/UX Design, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Engineering, Aviation, Computer Science or a related field.
- Master’s degree or further training in Human Factors, UI/UX design, aviation, systems design or safety-critical design may be useful, but is not required.
Essential Skills/Experience
- Practical UI/UX design experience for complex digital products, enterprise systems, data-heavy applications or technical prototypes.
- Strong proficiency in design software, especially Figma for wireframing, prototyping, design systems and developer handover. Illustrator or equivalent visual design tools would be useful.
- Experience designing interfaces involving dashboards, tables, filters, forms, maps, charts, status indicators, notifications or real-time data.
- Strong information architecture and interaction design skills, especially for products with multiple user roles, workflows and system states.
- Ability to write clear design requirements, design notes, user interface behaviour specifications and acceptance criteria.
- Ability to present, justify and negotiate design decisions with technical teams, stakeholders and management.
- Experience working directly with developers during implementation, including clarifying requirements, reviewing builds, validating interactions and resolving design feasibility issues.
- Understanding of design systems, user interface patterns and the discipline required to maintain consistency across multiple products.
- Willingness to learn Air Traffic Management concepts, including air traffic control workflows, ANSP (Air Navigation Service Provider) operations, FF-ICE (Flight and Flow Information for a Collaborative Environment), TBO (Trajectory Based Operations), flight planning and regional collaboration use cases.
Desirable Skills/Experience
- Experience facilitating workshops, user interviews, design reviews or product demonstrations with cross-functional stakeholders.
- Experience with Human Factors methods, cognitive workload, situational awareness, data visualisation or decision-support interfaces.
- Prior exposure to Air Traffic Management, air traffic control, airline operations, flight planning, aviation systems or aviation training.
- Experience in a safety-critical, regulated, simulation, command-and-control, monitoring or decision-support domain.
- Experience designing geospatial, simulation, dashboard, analytics or data insight interfaces.
- Experience contributing to or maintaining a component library or design system.
Essential / Desirable Traits
- Systems thinking: you can understand how users, data, workflows, constraints and product behaviour connect.
- Workflow empathy: you care about what users are trying to achieve in context, not just whether a screen looks clean.
- Clarity and rigour: you make complex things easier to understand, and document decisions clearly enough for others to build from them.
- Stakeholder confidence: you can explain, justify and negotiate design decisions without becoming defensive or vague.
- Practical ownership: you follow through from requirement clarification to design, implementation review and improvement.
Learning agility: you are willing to enter a difficult domain, ask good questions and build real understanding over time
At Thales, we’re committed to fostering a workplace where respect, trust, collaboration, and passion drive everything we do. Here, you’ll feel empowered to bring your best self, thrive in a supportive culture, and love the work you do. Join us, and be part of a team reimagining technology to create solutions that truly make a difference – for a safer, greener, and more inclusive world.
