Intermediate Systems Engineer – ISTAR System of System

Position Summary

Thales Canada, Defence & Security is engaged in supporting the Canadian Army’s Land Command, Control, Communications & Computers (C4) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (LC4ISR) systems which enable critical decisions on a daily basis.  Together with industry partners, Thales is building on the existing networks and applications to enhance digitized operations, support communications between joint and allied forces, and monitor and defend against the threats and evolving capabilities of potential adversaries.

Thales Canada is looking for people interested in directly contributing to the evolution of advanced digitized operations for the Canadian Army into the future, both in Canada and on overseas deployments.  The LC4ISR work is broadly divided into four areas, and this opportunity is with the “System of System” System Integration - ISTAR (SoS SI ISTAR)group at our Ottawa office. We are looking for a systems engineer to support deployment, configuration, integration and test of  ISTAR system on a System of System level, as part of an agile team.  This work includes network and software system configuration, requirement analysis, integration of applications, test automation, system diagrams creation, and test execution.

Regulatory Compliance Requirement

This position requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software or technical information controlled under the Canadian Export Control List and/or the US the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). All applicants must be eligible or able to obtain authorization for such access.

Key Areas of Responsibility

 A systems engineer should be comfortable in multidisciplinary and collaborative environments, performing duties such as:

  • Tailor the system engineering process, practices and tools;
  • Create and maintain network infrastructure to create simulation scenarios and test automation.
  • Participate in the creation and maintenance of test automation, leveraging GUI base automation tools (Squish).
  • Estimate and appropriately decompose work in an agile lifecycle process;
  • Provide timely and accurate status updates;
  • Identify, characterize, and describe issues in the system or its design through problem reports and document and design reviews;
  • Analyse requirements and develop test strategies, improving the test capabilities in the SoS SI Labs.
  • Author technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including the architecture, interfaces, installation elements, and lab diagrams;
  • Support the development of verification and validation artifacts including plans and procedures;
  • Collaborate with other functions during the implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs;
  • Resolution of technical issues arising during the implementation, integration and testing of the system and subsystem elements;
  • Support the installation and/or integration testing of the systems remotely or on customer site;

The specific duties associated with the project role could include:

  • Installing and configuring servers and software;
  • Troubleshooting server and software issues and providing resolutions;
  • Documenting configuration of the system;
  • Configuring and managing networks.
  • Creating and maintaining test automation.
  • Answering technical questions regarding servers and software;
  • Understanding of user accounts and password management;
  • Understanding of system infrastructure concepts (servers, databases, services, OS, security);
  • Management of virtual environments;

Minimum Requirements

  • 5 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains;
  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Windows Administration (Windows 10/11, Windows Server, Windows Permissions/Grouping, GPOs, Antivirus, SharePoint)
  • VMware Virtual Environments
  • Active Directory (highly desirable)
  • Networking (Cisco/HP/Dell)
  • Visio
  • System requirements management.
  • Automation (Python, Squish, Powershell, Ansible)

Physical Demands

  • Minimal lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site (including onboard vehicle or vessel).

Special Position Requirements

  • On site position. Full time, standard business hours. 
  • Possibility of occasional travel to customer site for technical support / integration activities.
  • Possibility of occasional travel within Canada for planning events.

The reference Total Target Compensation (TTC) market range for this position, inclusive of annual base salary and the variable compensation target, is between Total Target Cash (TTC) $80 – $95,000 -$110,000 CAD Annual.

This reflects how companies in a similar industry and geographic region generally pay for similar jobs. This range helps the Company make pay decisions as one data point among many. Where a position falls 5within this range is also dependent on other factors including – but not limited to – the employee’s career path history, competencies, skills and performance, as well as the company’s annual salary budget, the customer’s program requirements, and the company’s internal equity. Thales may offer additional benefits and other compensation, depending on circumstances not related to an applicant’s status protected by local, state, or federal law.
