About the project
Thales’ Defence Business Unit, part of the Romanian Engineering Competence Center, develops cutting-edge solutions and services for electronic combat systems, surveillance and reconnaissance, naval combat, surface warfare, and underwater warfare, integrating sensor and weapon systems with advanced data processing, decision support, and human-machine interfaces.
Together with specialists from our Sophia-Antipolis site, we contribute to the development of sonar systems for submarines and surface vessels, from underwater acoustics to the operator's graphical user interface (GUI).


About the job
We are looking for an experienced Full Stack Technical Lead with strong React experience, to join our engineering team and help us develop and evolve the software platform for the Sonar interface.


You will be part of a multidisciplinary and self-managing Agile team located in our premises in Bucharest. Our teams develop and test applications, features and/or components the software platforms used in the Defence domain. The development teams are responsible for the entire development cycle – from requirements analysis, development, testing and validation, to demonstrating the current status of the product. Cybersecurity is an integral part of the whole process.


You will collaborate with colleagues from France. The GUI team is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the operational GUIs for sonar operators. These GUIs are the eyes and ears of the submarines and surface ships.


Your tasks include

  • Actively contributing to the design of the software architecture of the sonar GUI component by supporting the software architect
  • Providing technical guidance to the GUI development team (up to 7 people)
  • Conducting preliminary studies to validate technical approaches and chosen architectures
  • Being a major contributor to the setup of the CI/CD pipeline for the component
  • Providing support to software integrators
  • Translate requirements into functional solutions. Writing technical documentation (specifications/design)
  • Evaluate and implement new technologies to integrate into and improve our products
  • Ensure consistent compliance with best practices and coding standards
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand and translate technical requirements


About you
Do you have a passion for technology, do you enjoy constantly developing your skills and are you interested in working on Defence systems for the Underwater Domain? Then you are the person we are looking for.


You are an experienced full stack technical lead with strong React experience. You enjoy personal development, both in hard skills and human skills. Your relevant hands-on past experience includes:

  • Web development experience (10 years)
  • Solid experience in using React (5+ years)
  • Solid experience in Java backend development (5 years)
  • Demonstrated technical guidance over a 5 people (incl. seniors) team for at least 3 years
  • Fluent in software configuration management (GIT/GITLAB/ARTIFACTORY/NEXUS)
  • Experience in writing software specification and design documents

You hold a bachelor or master degree in computer science, IT service management or comparable. You have flexibility and the ability to communicate fluently in English to all types of stakeholders (technical, management).


An important requirement to fulfil this role is flexibility and the ability to communicate efficiently in English (French is a plus) to all types (technical, management) of stakeholders. You are willing to work for in France for a period of a couple of weeks up to 3 months for the purpose of knowledge transfer.
