Field Service Engineer

Faslane

Primary Purpose of the Role:

You will be a member of Faslane based Field Services team, supporting the planning and conduct of predominantly marine engineering activities on our customers vessels. These activities will encompass both corrective and preventative maintenance on Marine Engines, Generators, Hydraulic Systems and Electrical Power Systems or may be an advisory role as required.

Principal Relationships:

  • Accountable through the Field Services Manager - Faslane to the Head of Field Services
  • Other Field Services Engineers and the UK Field Services team
  • Other Field Service Managers and teams within the department
  • Project teams
  • Programme Managers
  • Service Delivery Managers

Key Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Be responsible for the Health and Safety of all Thales activities carried out by you and comply with the following:
  • Risk Assessments
  • COSHH Assessments
  • Safe systems of work
  • Be ultimately accountable for your own day-to-day welfare
  • Support to Vessels in Defect Rectification:
  • Conduct and Supervise Front-line support including Fault diagnosis and testing as well as supporting trials both in harbour and at sea
  • Maintaining engineering records to approved MCA / ISM standards (for example, defect reporting and planned maintenance schedules, using an electronic system)
  • Write engineering defect reports
  • Support to Vessels in Maintenance Periods / Refits:
  • Conduct scheduled maintenance activities
  • Escalate engineering issues to the Service Delivery Manager as required
  • Maintaining engineering records to approved MCA / ISM standards (for example, defect reporting and planned maintenance schedules, using an electronic system)
  • Write post maintenance reports
  • This role will require your ability to go to sea to support tests and trials, and will require after hours and night working at times.
  • Identification of your own personal and professional development.
  • Compliance with all export control rules and regulations including International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
  • You will also perform additional ad-hoc duties that will arise from time to time that are consistent with the nature of this position.

Be able to work in restricted spaces – the USV engine space has been designated a restricted space rather than confined but it is extremely tight and not everyone will be able/willing to access the compartment.

Key performance Indicators against Responsibilities and Tasks:

This role of the Field Service Engineering Team is continually monitored for performance and some of the following Key performance indicators (KPI’s) will be used

  • Quality of work produced against agreed standards.
  • Delivery to timescales.
  • Delivery to budget.
  • Performance against Thales key values.
  • Performance against mandatory training and the development of team competence in Thales Sonar and Electronic Warfare Systems.

Expected Competence Level:

Skills (underpinning Knowledge)

  • Installation, fault-finding and repair of a variety of marine engines, generators and systems
  • Extensive experience in service, maintenance and operation of marine mechanical equipment including heavy marine and mechanical plant (pumps, hydraulics, etc)
  • Experience in marine electrical systems 240v/415v/24v
  • Strong analytical and methodical problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver verbal and written briefings to communicate technical issues to a wide variety of audiences
  • Ability to work under pressure independently during periods of intense activity
  • Experience in working to preventative maintenance engineering schedules
  • Able to use a range of IT tools.

Experience:

As a Marine Field Services Engineer, you will have a track record of performing in a relevant marine engineering discipline, preferably dealing with Marine Engines, Generators, and Hydraulic systems. Ideally this would have been gained within a defence environment, though this is not essential.  You must be capable of resolving issues and problems. You will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate at all levels in the spoken and written word. Your experience will demonstrate your high level of self-motivation and the ability to work under pressure are vital.

Qualifications and Certification:

Essential:

  • HNC in a relevant subject or equivalent (desirable)
  • NVQ Marine Engineer or equivalent
  • Full UK Driving License
