The role:
Thales Australia is seeking an experienced Acoustic Warfare Capability Advisor to join our team in Rockingham. In this pivotal role, you will leverage your comprehensive knowledge of submarine and surface ship operations—especially in acoustic warfare analysis and anti-submarine warfare—from an end-user perspective. (Ideally candidates with experience in the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy, or US Navy)
Your deep understanding of the operational deployment and use of Thales passive and active sonar systems, as well as complementary decision support tools for submarines and ships, will enable you to directly support end users and inform business strategy. You will help anticipate the evolving strategic needs of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and play a key role in driving capability enhancements.
Key Responsibilities:
Represent Thales in meetings with the Royal Australian Navy to discuss sonar system performance and operational issues.
Maintain ongoing communication with RAN stakeholders to gather feedback on sonar products and systems.
Contribute to design and documentation efforts for submarine and surface ship sonar upgrades and programs.
Develop and deliver training materials for sonar operators and support field service teams.
Assist with operational maintenance and troubleshooting of sonar systems.
Identify and communicate future operational needs and trends within the RAN.
Influence engineering and system improvement decisions using your operational experience and stakeholder feedback.
Support project teams with operational concepts and provide input for bids and validation strategies.
Qualifications and Experience:
Qualified Acoustic Warfare Analyst (AWA) or equivalent qualifications.
Minimum 10 years’ experience as a submariner with a specialisation in sonar.
Extensive experience in sonar operations on USN/RAN/RN submarines.
Expertise in towed array operation/analysis (2076/2087/SHORT-TAS preferred).
Deep warfare, acoustic intelligence, and acoustic warfare expertise.
Advanced competence in oceanography/hydrography (e.g., use of acoustic prediction tools).
Highly skilled in broadband/narrowband analysis and operation of spectral analysis tools on military sonar platforms.
Strong influencing and stakeholder engagement skills, including experience engaging with senior leaders in Navy/industry.
Technical knowledge of submarine and surface ship sonar systems is desirable
Understanding of complex, real-time military systems/solutions is desirable
