Job Description

About the Team

OpenAI Finance is responsible for ensuring the organization is set up for success in pursuit of its mission.

OpenAI’s Tax and Trade team sits at the center of OpenAI’s global growth—shaping how cutting-edge AI products, partnerships, and infrastructure scale across borders while navigating complex tax, trade, and regulatory regimes. We operate as strategic operators, not just compliance experts, embedding early in product, finance, policy, and infrastructure decisions to manage risk, unlock incentives, and enable OpenAI to grow responsibly and competitively worldwide.

As OpenAI’s products, monetization models, and global infrastructure expand, our tax systems must scale with the same rigor and reliability as our product architecture. The team partners deeply with Financial Engineering, Product Engineering, and Finance Systems to build a modern tax technology stack that enables accurate, real-time tax determination across OpenAI’s global business.

About the Role

We’re hiring an Indirect Tax Compliance Manager to own and continuously improve our end-to-end indirect tax compliance process. This role will be responsible for driving timely, accurate compliance, maintaining audit readiness, and building scalable processes that improve visibility, control, and efficiency across the Tax function. While the role is primarily focused on US indirect tax compliance, the scope may expand over time to support international indirect tax compliance as the team and business continue to grow.

You will sit at the intersection of Tax, Accounting, Finance, and cross-functional business teams, helping ensure that tax compliance is well-controlled, well-documented, and supported by reliable data and technology. The ideal candidate brings strong US indirect tax compliance experience, a detail-oriented and process-driven mindset, and a genuine passion for leveraging technology to streamline and improve compliance operations. A strong interest in automation, analytics, and process improvement are important for success in this role.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and we use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week.

In this Role, you will:

  • Own the end-to-end US indirect tax compliance process, including data gathering, return support, filing coordination, payments, reconciliations, and post-filing documentation.

  • Manage day-to-day compliance operations and partner with external service providers to ensure timely, accurate preparation and submission of US indirect tax filings.

  • Develop and maintain audit-ready workpapers, reconciliations, process documentation, and supporting evidence for internal and external audits.

  • Coordinate responses to tax authority notices, audits, and information requests, working closely with internal stakeholders and outside advisors.

  • Strengthen the control environment around tax compliance by designing, documenting, and improving key controls and review procedures.

  • Streamline the end-to-end compliance process by identifying automation opportunities, reducing manual work, and standardizing repeatable workflows.

  • Use tools to build dashboards, monitor compliance status, track KPIs, identify anomalies, and improve reporting visibility.

  • Partner cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Legal, and business teams to ensure indirect tax requirements are incorporated into upstream processes and downstream reporting.

  • Review and validate tax data from ERP, billing, and other source systems to support accurate filings and reconciliations.

  • Support new products, process changes, and system implementations by assessing compliance impacts and helping operationalize requirements.

  • Monitor changes in US indirect tax rules, filing requirements, and compliance obligations, and translate them into practical process updates.

  • Build scalable documentation and operational playbooks that make the compliance process easier to manage, review, and improve over time.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in US indirect tax compliance, tax operations, or a related role in industry or public accounting.

  • Strong experience with US indirect tax compliance processes, audit support, reconciliations, and documentation, alongside a strong interest in expanding compliance capabilities to support other jurisdictions.

  • Experience managing or partnering with outsourced compliance providers and coordinating across multiple stakeholders.

  • An enthusiasm for using technology, automation, and analytics to improve tax processes.

  • A strong systems mindset, with experience working across spreadsheets, ERP systems, billing data, and tax-related workflows.

  • Proven ability to identify process gaps, improve controls, and drive operational efficiencies across the compliance lifecycle.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including comfort working with large data sets and transaction-level detail.

  • Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to work effectively across Tax, Finance, Accounting and external advisors.

  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • CPA or advanced degree in Accounting, Tax, Finance, or a related field.

  • Experience in a high-growth or technology-driven environment.

  • Experience with tax engines, ERP platforms and compliance technology tools such as Stripe, Vertex, Oracle, or similar systems.

  • Experience building process reporting, dashboards and workflow visibility tools.
