We are seeking a physicist with a robust software engineering background that has an interest in developing, implementing, and maintaining simulation tools for superconducting qubits and superconducting electronics. The ideal candidate has experience creating simulation tools used to design new experiments and understand test results. This position will involve understanding and improving existing simulation tools as well as developing new ones.
This position requires work on site at Northrop Grumman’s Linthicum or Annapolis Junction, MD area facilities. This position is 100% full-time onsite.
Your responsibilities:
- Design and develop custom simulation frameworks and models for novel experiments on superconducting devices.
- Debug existing simulation tools and support implementation of new capabilities.
- Support the current and future development of simulation tools within function, cost, and schedule constraints.
- Analyze simulation results on superconducting qubits.
- Mentor less experienced staff to help them learn software development skills.
What you need to be successful in the role:
- Interest/excitement in research areas involving qubits and superconducting electronics.
- Tenacity when diving into problems to follow them through and find the optimal solution.
- Ability to distill generic program goals into concrete action.
- Presentation and communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate in a small group setting (4-7 people) as well as work independently.
This position can be filled at the Principal level OR Sr. Principal level. Qualifications for both are listed below:
Basic Qualifications for Principal Quantum Modeling Physicist:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) with 5 years of relevant experience; Master's degree in STEM related field with 3 years' of relevant technical experience OR Masters’ degree in STEM related field and currently enrolled in a PhD program with a completion date prior to start with 1 year of relevant technical experience OR PhD in STEM related field with 1 year of relevant technical experience.
- Experience with physics-based simulations.
- Experience developing models to understand experimental results.
- Experience in a collaborative software development environment.
- Familiarity with software best practices and development lifecycle.
- Proficiency writing code in Python.
- This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance per business requirements.
Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal Quantum Simulation Developer:
- PhD in theoretical physics, electrical engineering, or a STEM related field with 4 years of professional experience; Master's degree with 6 years of relevant professional experience; Bachelor's degree with 8 years of professional experience.
- Experience with physics-based simulations.
- Experience developing models to understand experimental results.
- Experience in a collaborative software development environment.
- Familiarity with software best practices and development lifecycle.
- Proficiency writing code in Python.
- Experience mentoring teams and providing leadership in a scientific setting.
- This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. Citizen.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance per business requirements.
Preferred Qualifications for both Principal AND Sr. Principal Quantum Simulation Developer:
- PhD in theoretical physics, electrical engineering, or a STEM related field.
- Experience writing in a version-controlled, OOP-based codebase in Python.
- Experience with code parallelization in an HPC environment.
- Experience with code review.
- Leadership experience working on a scientific research team.
- Experience with codebase design and architecture.
- Active U.S. Government security clearance.
