Northrop Grumman is looking for a Machinist Level 4 to support our Machine Shop department. As a member of the Machine Shop department youβll work in a fast-paced team environment alongside fellow machinists, design engineers, and quality inspectors. This position will serve on-site at the machine shop in Goleta, CA.
In this job role the machinist will independently set up, operate, and machine using a variety of machine tools such as lathes (manual), mills (CNC and manual), and precision grinders to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exact tolerances and dimensions. Machinists will interpret blueprints, sketches, and engineering specifications; determine sequence of operations, number of cuts required, and method of setup; use a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments; makes standard shop computations relating to dimensions of work, tooling, feeds, and speeds; measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points to lay out stock for machining; fit and assemble precision parts into mechanical equipment and determine material, parts, and equipment required. Some machines may be numerically controlled. Typically requires completion of a formal apprenticeship or equivalent training and experience.
Responsibilities:
- Sets up and operates a variety of machine tools such as manual lathes, manual mills, CNC mills and precision grinders to make metal parts, mechanisms, tools, or machines to exacting tolerances and dimensions without supervision.
- Serves as a resource to others in the resolution of problems and issues regarding machining.
- Work closely with engineers, designers, and project managers to resolve issues, refine designs for manufacturability, and meet production deadlines.
- Responsible for quality of the product by performing both in-process and final part inspections using a variety of machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, and CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine)
- Perform routine machine maintenance to avoid downtime and ensure optimal performance.
- Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, organized workspace to meet aerospace cleanliness and safety standards.
- Assuring tooling and materials readiness
- Provide training and guidance to others in all aspects of Mill/Lathe equipment setup, operations, and maintenance
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with ability to work with others at all levels of the organization

Basic Qualifications for Machinist Level 4:
- 6 years machining experience with 4+ yearsβ experience on 3 Axis and 4 CNC machines and minimum 3 years in 5-axis CNC machining set-up and programming.
- Proficiency with CNC Mills and machine programming software (example Mastercam, CAMworks, etc.)
- Must have experience running manual machines and performing set-ups.
- Ability to read (English) and interpret production specifications, production diagrams, assembly drawings, and technical specifications including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) standards to ensure dimensional accuracy.
- Experience in following written set-up instructions and /or performing unique set-ups
- Experience fabricating component parts where set-ups are non-routine and tolerances are difficult to acquire and maintain
- Able to communicate clearly and professionally with individuals inside and outside the organization.
- Able to work in a standing position for extended time periods
- Experience in complex measurements and advanced shop math calculations relative to tolerances, dimensions, tooling, and feeds and speeds
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Able to lift or move a minimum of 35 -50 lbs. for up to 12 hours per day; pushing or pulling 35 -50+ lbs. occasionally throughout the workday
- Must be a U.S. citizen
Preferred Qualifications for Machinist Level 4
- Experience with Fanuc and HAAS Controllers preferred.
