Job Description

Katalyst Description:

We build robotic spacecraft that enable dynamic space operations, creating a future where maneuvering, upgrading, refueling, and exploration are as routine as they are on Earth. Getting to space and overcoming the gravity well is only half the story. What you do there is the future. We are not building the trains. We are building the machines that lay down the tracks. By developing the foundational capabilities that make sustained, responsive operations possible, we enable a new era of space activity that strengthens national security and ensures freedom of action in an increasingly contested domain.

Katalyst Culture:

Working at Katalyst is intense, hands-on, and deeply rewarding. You’ll take real ownership and see your work move from concept to operations in an environment where the problems are hard and the impact is real. We value humility, craftsmanship, and doing things the right way, even when it’s harder. You’ll work closely with thoughtful, driven teammates who push each other to do their best.

Role Description:

As our AI&T Avionics Technician, you’ll play a key role in bringing next-generation spacecraft and payloads to life. You’ll work closely with engineering and test teams to assemble avionics subsystems, build flight wire harnesses, and support testing of both flight and ground-based systems. Your work directly enables the autonomous capabilities that power real-time space domain awareness and on-orbit servicing.

This role is ideal for someone with a strong electrical assembly foundation, a passion for hands-on problem solving, and a desire to grow in a fast-moving startup environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Assembly & Integration

  • Assemble avionics subsystems for spacecraft, satellite payloads, and ground-based test articles.
  • Build engineering model and flight model wire harness assemblies.
  • Assemble surface mount and through-hole electrical components onto prototype and flight PCBs.
  • Integrate printed circuit assemblies, wire harnesses, sensors, and mechanical components into complete systems.
  • Support cleanroom operations, including hardware handling and contamination control.

Test Execution

  • Set up and operate thermal vacuum environmental test equipment.
  • Support environmental testing, electronics functional testing, and flight harness safe-to-mate testing.
  • Maintain detailed logs of test setups, procedures, and results.

Process & Documentation

  • Interpret and follow detailed engineering drawings, work instructions, and procedures.
  • Support design reviews and assist with design-for-assembly feedback.
  • Track and report non-conformances and support root cause analysis.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in electrical, aerospace, or related technology field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • 3+ years in assembly and testing of aerospace, automotive, or commercial electrical systems.
  • Proficient soldering skills with IPC certifications highly preferred.
  • Proficient wire harness assembly skills with IPC certifications highly preferred.
  • Experience working in an R&D or low-rate production environment.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy.

Additional Requirements:

Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed.

Compensation and Benefits:

The anticipated pay range for this position is $36–$45/hour (based on qualifications and experience). You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage.

At Katalyst our work on projects involving the U.S. Department of Defense requires adherence to International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), 22 C.F.R. Parts 120-130, which requires compliance with U.S. export laws before allowing employees to perform certain positions. Currently, our available roles necessitate access to ITAR-controlled information, and as a result, Katalyst would have to ensure any non-US person is authorized access to ITAR information before the commencement of employment. We are committed to equal employment opportunities and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin.
