Sr Director - Product Integrity - TeraWave
Job Description
Application close date:
Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.
Position Overview
We are seeking an exceptional Director of Product Integrity to lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of quality and reliability programs across our satellite connectivity systems. This is a strategic leadership role responsible for ensuring that our hardware and software platforms meet the highest standards of performance, safety, and reliability demanded by mission-critical applications. You will own the quality vision across the entire product lifecycle—from concept through on-orbit operations—and drive a data-driven culture that treats reliability as a competitive advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish and own the quality strategy across all hardware and software subsystems, defining metrics, standards, and processes that align with mission-critical reliability requirements and regulatory frameworks (including space qualification standards and industry certifications)
- Build and lead a world-class quality organization, recruiting and developing engineers and specialists in reliability engineering, failure analysis, test engineering, and quality assurance; establish clear accountability and career pathways
- Design and implement comprehensive reliability programs including FMEA, fault tree analysis, design reviews, and predictive analytics; ensure rigorous application across all development phases and supply chain partners
- Drive test strategy and validation for both hardware and software, defining test plans, acceptance criteria, and qualification protocols; oversee test execution and data analysis to validate system performance under operational conditions
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action for field issues, manufacturing defects, and design anomalies; establish systemic improvements and track closure to prevent recurrence
- Establish quality metrics and dashboards that provide real-time visibility into product health, manufacturing performance, and reliability trends; use data to inform engineering decisions and resource allocation
- Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to balance quality rigor with development velocity; influence design decisions early to prevent costly rework and field failures
- Manage supplier quality and supply chain reliability, establishing qualification criteria, audit programs, and performance monitoring for critical component suppliers
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and customer requirements; maintain documentation and traceability for certification and audit purposes
- Champion a quality culture across the organization through training, communication, and recognition; make quality everyone's responsibility, not just the quality team's
- Oversee on-orbit reliability monitoring and anomaly management, working with operations and customer success teams to rapidly diagnose and resolve issues affecting deployed systems
- Develop and execute continuous improvement initiatives using lean and Six Sigma methodologies; identify and eliminate waste, variability, and inefficiency in processes and products
Qualifications
- 15+ years of experience in hardware reliability, product integrity, or related engineering disciplines, with at least 8 years leading large technical organizations
- Proven success owning reliability and safety for complex hardware programs from concept through high-volume production and field deployment
- Deep technical expertise across semiconductors, SoCs, advanced packaging, displays, materials, connectors, mechanical assemblies, and system-level architectures
- Demonstrated experience leading failure analysis and root cause investigations for high-stakes field issues and product safety events
- Strong background in design-for-reliability methodologies, including FMEA, accelerated life testing, physics-of-failure modeling, and statistical reliability analysis
- Experience building and scaling reliability test and failure-analysis lab infrastructure across multiple geographies
- Track record of partnering with manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams to drive design transfer, qualification, and launch readiness at contract manufacturers
- Ability to communicate technical risk and reliability data to executive leadership, partners, and external stakeholders to support business and investment decisions
- Excellent organizational, communication, and people-leadership skills, with a track record of delivering on aggressive timelines in fast-paced environments
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, materials science, physics, or related technical field
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in engineering science, mechanics, materials, electrical, or mechanical engineering
- Experience with space-grade or aerospace hardware, including satellite terminals, phased array antennas, or other long-lifecycle, high-reliability systems
- Experience leading reliability for outdoor energy hardware, EV infrastructure, or other ruggedized industrial systems
- Background in functional safety (e.g., TUV-certified Functional Safety Engineer) and quality/operational excellence frameworks (e.g., ASQ CMQ/OE, CRE)
- Familiarity with site reliability engineering (SRE) practices and applying AI/ML to reliability engineering, failure analysis, and engineering knowledge management
- Experience scaling hardware reliability programs across global operations spanning North America and Asia
- Recognized industry leadership, including IEEE membership, conference leadership (e.g., IRPS, IRIC, SAE), publications, and patents in reliability or hardware technology
- Experience managing multimillion-dollar budgets and driving multimillion-dollar warranty and quality savings through reliability improvements
