Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed. At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!
This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin’s mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team fosters innovation and drives engineering workflows of the future, shared solutions and standards, simplicity and lower costs, and manufacturable design.
This role is part of Advanced Concepts and Enterprise Engineering (ACE), supporting Blue Origin's mission of millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. The team develops shared engineering capabilities that improve how our teams design, analyze, and manufacture aerospace systems.
As a Software Development Engineer III, you will help create and support a new enterprise system for engineering license management and workload orchestration. You will work across a broad portfolio of engineering applications that use FlexNet Publisher (FLEXlm) floating-license servers, including tools from Ansys, Dassault Systemes, MathWorks, PTC, and Siemens.
The role combines engineering-tool infrastructure, license operations, process design, and software automation. You will translate hands-on license-management knowledge into a system that provides enterprise visibility, automates administration, and ultimately coordinates compute-intensive work based on floating-license availability. As the capability matures, you may also contribute to AI-enabled analysis pipelines and surrogate-model development that help engineering teams obtain results faster and use constrained software licenses more efficiently.
Responsibilities
Enterprise License Management System
- Help define, design, implement, and operate a new enterprise system for managing FLEXlm-based engineering license environments.
- Translate license-administration workflows, operational risks, and user needs into system requirements and incremental capabilities.
- Integrate with license servers and vendor utilities to collect availability, checkout, denial, reservation, and utilization data.
- Create reliable automation for license-server monitoring, reporting, alerting, configuration validation, and administrative workflows.
- Provide engineering teams and administrators with clear visibility into license demand, capacity, service health, and upcoming renewals.
- Establish consistent processes for onboarding license servers, vendors, products, features, and user communities into the system.
Workload Queuing and Utilization Optimization
- Help develop workload-queuing capabilities that coordinate engineering analysis jobs with available floating licenses and compute resources.
- Define scheduling and prioritization needs that improve throughput, fairness, and license utilization across teams and programs.
- Prevent avoidable job failures and idle capacity by integrating license availability into workload admission, dispatch, retry, and recovery logic.
- Analyze historical demand and usage patterns to identify bottlenecks, forecast capacity needs, and recommend license-pool improvements.
AI Analysis and Surrogate Modeling
- Contribute to data pipelines for engineering analysis, surrogate-model training, validation, deployment, and inference based on experience and project needs.
- Collaborate with analysts, data scientists, and engineering domain experts to prepare simulation data and translate analysis workflows into reliable software products.
- Contribute to the development and evaluation of surrogate models where appropriate, including model accuracy, uncertainty, performance, and applicability assessments.
- Partner with software and data specialists to connect license-aware workload orchestration with AI-enabled analysis workflows.
Software Engineering and Operations
- Use scripting and automation to improve license operations, with Python as the preferred language.
- Produce maintainable, observable, and documented solutions suitable for enterprise engineering use.
- Diagnose issues spanning application code, license services, networks, compute environments, vendor tools, and engineering workflows.
- Partner with engineering-tool administrators, infrastructure teams, cybersecurity, vendors, and end users to deliver secure and supportable solutions.
- Participate in design reviews, code reviews, operational support, and continuous improvement of team development practices.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional experience supporting engineering applications, software-license infrastructure, enterprise systems, software development, or a related technical area.
- Professional experience administering or integrating with FlexNet Publisher (FLEXlm) floating-license environments.
- Understanding of floating-license behavior, including feature pools, checkouts, denials, reservations, options files, vendor daemons, and license usage reporting.
- Experience using scripts, automation, vendor utilities, or administrative tools to improve repeatability and reduce manual effort.
- Experience gathering operational requirements and helping implement a new technical system, service, or enterprise capability.
- Experience troubleshooting distributed systems across applications, servers, networks, databases, and compute environments.
- Ability to turn ambiguous engineering and operational needs into reliable technical solutions.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively across technical disciplines.
- Must be a U.S. person as defined by applicable export-control regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Data Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience supporting FLEXlm-licensed products from Ansys, Dassault Systemes, MathWorks, PTC, Siemens, or other engineering-software vendors.
- Experience developing production software in Python or another modern programming language.
- Experience designing applications, services, APIs, automation, or data pipelines used by technical or engineering teams.
- Working knowledge of source control, automated testing, code review, and CI/CD practices.
- Experience building license monitoring, usage analytics, forecasting, chargeback, reservation, or optimization tools.
- Experience developing workload schedulers, job queues, distributed workers, or integrations with batch and high-performance computing environments.
- Experience coordinating software-license availability with cloud, on-premises, or hybrid compute capacity.
- Experience with scientific Python and machine-learning libraries such as NumPy, pandas, SciPy, scikit-learn, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
- Experience developing surrogate, reduced-order, response-surface, or other machine-learning models for engineering analysis.
- Experience building ML pipelines for data preparation, training, model validation, deployment, inference, monitoring, and reproducibility.
- Familiarity with engineering analysis workflows such as finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, systems modeling, optimization, or multidisciplinary design analysis.
