This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
The Automation Installation Supervisor in our Factory Automation Group will lead and manage a team of Installation Technicians responsible for the assembly, integration, and on-site installation of custom robotic cells and automated machinery designed and developed by the Factory Automation team at Blue Origin. This role bridges hands-on technical expertise with team leadership, project coordination, and cross-functional collaboration to ensure installations are executed safely, on schedule, and to the highest quality standards. The Automation Installation Supervisor will be accountable for the day-to-day performance of the installation team, the planning and execution of installation projects, and continuous improvement of processes and practices within the group. This role requires a seasoned technical leader with deep experience in industrial automation, proven supervisory capability, and a strong commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Management
- Directly supervise and mentor a team of Automation Installation Technicians, providing day-to-day direction, technical guidance, and performance feedback.
- Foster a team culture rooted in safety, accountability, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct regular one-on-ones, performance reviews, and development planning for direct reports.
- Identify skills gaps within the team and drive targeted training and development programs.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, and integration of new technicians into the team.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for technical and logistical issues encountered by technicians in the field.
- Installation Planning & Execution
- Own end-to-end planning and execution of robotic cell and automation system installation projects across Blue Origin facilities and customer sites.
- Develop and manage installation schedules, resource plans, and work packages in coordination with project managers and engineering leads.
- Coordinate pre-installation activities including utility readiness, floor preparation, equipment staging, and tooling procurement.
- Conduct installation readiness reviews to ensure all documentation, materials, and site conditions are in place prior to mobilization.
- Oversee on-site installation activities, ensuring work is performed per engineering documentation, safety requirements, and quality standards.
- Manage site logistics for multi-technician installations, including travel coordination, tool and equipment shipping, and on-site resource allocation.
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) activities, ensuring successful sign-off and system handoff to operations.
- Safety & Compliance
- Champion a safety-first culture within the installation team; ensure all team members are trained and compliant with applicable safety standards and procedures.
- Enforce strict adherence to lockout/tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, electrical safety, and rigging/lifting protocols on all job sites.
- Conduct and document pre-task safety briefings, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and site-specific safety orientation for all installation projects.
- Identify and mitigate safety risks proactively; escalate unresolved hazards through appropriate channels.
- Ensure compliance with NFPA 79, NEC, OSHA, and Blue Origin EHS policies across all installation activities.
- Quality & Documentation
- Ensure all installation work meets engineering specifications, quality standards, and acceptance criteria.
- Oversee creation and maintenance of as-built documentation, installation records, and completion reports.
- Implement and enforce standardized installation processes, checklists, and work instructions across the team.
- Collect and communicate field feedback to engineering teams to drive design-for-installability improvements.
- Manage non-conformance identification, documentation, and resolution during installation and commissioning phases.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as the primary interface between the Installation team and Factory Automation engineering, project management, controls, and facilities stakeholders.
- Collaborate with controls engineers and system architects during commissioning and startup activities to ensure seamless system integration.
- Participate in project planning meetings, design reviews, and schedule reviews to provide installation perspective and early identification of risks.
- Coordinate with facilities and site operations teams at each installation location to align on infrastructure, access, and schedule requirements.
- Communicate installation status, milestone progress, and open issues to project stakeholders regularly and proactively.
Required Qualifications
- 6+ years of hands-on experience in industrial automation equipment assembly, installation, or commissioning.
- 2+ years of experience in a supervisory, lead, or team lead role overseeing technical personnel in a field or production environment.
- Strong working knowledge of robotic systems, custom automation machinery, and their mechanical and electrical installation requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and assembly documentation.
- Solid understanding of industrial safety standards including LOTO, OSHA general industry requirements, NFPA 79, and machine guarding regulations.
- Proven experience planning and managing multi-person installation or construction projects from mobilization through commissioning and handoff.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team development skills with the ability to build a high-performing technical team.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively interface with engineering, operations, and facilities stakeholders at all levels.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, adapt to changing project conditions, and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Willingness and ability to travel domestically to support installations and customer site activities.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
- Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in industrial technology, mechatronics, electrical engineering technology, or a related technical field.
- Experience in a system integrator, custom machine builder, or advanced manufacturing environment.
- Familiarity with PLC-based control architectures and experience supporting controls engineers during commissioning activities.
- Experience with rigging, millwright operations, and precision alignment of large industrial equipment.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing standardized work processes, installation procedures, and training programs for technical teams.
- Proficiency with project management and task tracking tools (e.g., Jira, MS Project, Smartsheet).
- Experience managing subcontractors or third-party installation vendors.
- Forklift and/or overhead crane operator certification.
- Familiarity with aerospace or defense manufacturing environments and associated quality management systems.
Preferred Qualifications
