Job Description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of Blue Origin corporate functions, providing centralized support across Blue Origin business unit teams, functions, and locations.

The Principal Analyst – Technical Accounting, Projects & Controls is a senior leader within Blue Origin's Accounting organization and the definitive subject matter expert across complex accounting topics, project/contract set-up, revenue recognition, and internal controls. This role provides strategic direction and technical leadership while serving as a versatile "utility player" who drives major process improvements, architects systems and controls, and guides the organization through complex accounting challenges as the business grows.

You will lead the evaluation of the most complex and non-routine transactions, deliver authoritative guidance on technical accounting matters (including but not limited to revenue recognition), oversee project and contract set-up in our systems, and architect our control environment. You will strategically partner with Business Unit Finance, Legal, Contracts, Operations, Tax, and Program teams to influence deal structuring, project launch, and establish frameworks for ongoing performance management.

We are looking for someone who combines exceptional technical accounting expertise with strategic vision and leadership capability, who excels at navigating between detailed analysis, leading cross-functional projects, and developing organizational capabilities. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to the highest standards to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the definitive technical accounting resource for the Accounting and Finance teams, researching and applying U.S. GAAP (including ASC 606 and other relevant standards) to complex and unusual transactions.
  • Analyze, document and champion accounting conclusions for new products, business models, and contract structures, including multi-element arrangements and government contracts.
  • Lead project and contract set-up in the ERP and subledger systems, ensuring appropriate configuration of key attributes (e.g., funding, performance obligations, milestones, billing terms, cost tracking).
  • Drive revenue recognition assessments and documentation for significant customer arrangements, including identification of performance obligations, allocation of consideration, and treatment of contract modifications.
  • Design, maintain, and improve internal controls over key accounting cycles (e.g., project set-up, order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, close and reporting), ensuring compliance with US GAAP and applicable Government Accounting Standards.
  • Partner with executive-level stakeholders across functions (Business Unit Finance, Contracts, Legal, Operations, Tax, Program Management) to evaluate accounting implications of business decisions and to operationalize accounting policies.
  • Lead end-to-end process improvement initiatives, ERP enhancements, or automation efforts that impact the broader accounting organization — not just participating in them.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies, process documentation, and technical memos to support internal reviews and external audits.
  • Provide training and guidance to Accounting, Finance, and business partners on technical accounting topics, project/account set-up, and control requirements.
  • Act as a strategic "utility player" within the Accounting team by leading high-priority projects, special initiatives, and complex analyses as business needs evolve.
  • Serves as primary point of contact for external auditors, regulatory bodies (e.g., DCAA), or other outside parties on high-complexity matters.
  • Recognized as the go-to expert for the most complex technical accounting research, white papers, and position memos with organization-wide impact.
  • Formally mentors and develops Senior and Staff-level accountants; may influence team structure, hiring decisions, and capability-building strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with concentration in accounting or finance; CPA preferred.
  • 8+ years general accounting experience, including extensive application of ASC 606.
  • Expert-level understanding of US GAAP and internal controls over financial reporting.
  • Experience with government contracting and related accounting standards highly desired.
  • Self-starter with bias for action – builder vs. maintainer mentality.
  • Demonstrated leadership in driving complex accounting initiatives and guiding teams through challenges.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
