Job Description
Job Description:
In order to support Dynamics & Loads department, Airbus Helicopters is looking for a
Master student in the field of Dynamics & Vibrations (d/f/m)
You are looking for a master thesis and want to get to know the work of a job title? Then apply now! We look forward to you supporting us in the department Dynamics & Loads as a Masterand (d/f/m)!
Location: Donauwörth
Start: April 2026 (with flexibility)
Duration: 6 months
Your location
At our Donauwörth site, located on the banks of the river Danube, we develop helicopters from the initial idea to the airworthy product. Watch them take off and touch down on our own on-site test airfield.
Your benefits
Attractive salary and work-life balance with an 35-hour week (flexitime).
Mobile working after agreement with the department.
Traveling within Europe (team events) is possible after consultation and agreement from the department.
International environment with the opportunity to network globally.
Work with modern/diversified technologies.
At Airbus, we see you as a valuable team member and you are not hired to brew coffee, instead you are in close contact with the interfaces and are part of our weekly team meetings.
Opportunity to participate in the Generation Airbus Community to expand your own network.
Background
Compared to widely used FE methods in dynamics and vibration, the application of multibody codes offer special advantages e.g. in view of transient response analysis, configuration changes and large translations and rotations. For helicopter drive train systems consisting of main and tail rotors, shafts, gear boxes and engines, interest is e.g. in studying the behavior of clutching/de-clutching of the free wheels or failure cases. Concluding, multibody codes are first choice for studying such unsteady behavior in the time domain.
Objectives of the thesis
For dynamics and vibrations, helicopter drive train systems are mainly investigated by analytical approaches (e.g. implemented in the scientific software Matlab) on global level with focus on torsional degrees of freedom and resulting torque moments. Objective is to implement a mechanical helicopter drive train model of a light twin helicopter in a multibody code, to compare the modal characteristics with the analytical model. The drive train system is modified for hybridization compared to the serial variant.
Your tasks and responsibilities
Familiarization with helicopter drive train systems and the related dynamic characteristics
Familiarization with capabilities and usage of multibody codes (e.g. MSC.ADAMS) for helicopter drive train systems
Reviewing existing helicopter drive train models implemented in the multibody code MSC.ADAMS
Modeling and implementation of the helicopter drive train system of the light twin helicopter in the multibody code
Comparison of results of the mechanical model in the multibody code with reference results from an analytical model
Simulation of unsteady operating conditions and assessment of transient characteristics
Optional: Co-simulation with engine control algorithms e.g. by Matlab
Desired skills and qualifications
Background in structural mechanics / structural dynamics
Basic knowledge of CAE tools and viewers used for pre- and post-processing (e.g. CATIA, ADAMS Viewer, Hyperworks)
Basic knowledge of multibody codes (e.g. MSC.ADAMS) and/or of FE solvers (e.g. MSC.NASTRAN)
Knowledge in Matlab applications
