Ubicloud
Open source alternative to AWS
About the Company
Ubicloud is an open source cloud that can run anywhere. Our cloud services include elastic compute, block storage, virtual networking and firewalls, managed Postgres, and powerful IAM.
Ubicloud provides these services on bare metal providers, such as Hetzner, Leaseweb, or AWS Bare Metal. You can self-host our software or use our managed service to reduce your cloud costs by 3-10x.
Tech Stack
Ubicloud follows an established pattern in building public cloud services. A control plane manages a data plane, where the data plane usually leverages open source software.
Our control plane uses Ruby, the Roda framework, and PostgreSQL.
Our data plane uses well-established open source projects for each service. Our compute service Linux KVM, cloud-init, and Cloud Hypervisor. Block storage uses SPDK, virtual networking reprograms Linux kernel subsystems, and Managed Postgres uses well, Postgres.
We're on a mission to rebuild the cloud market with different values. We're just starting and we're looking for driven and talented individuals.
Founders
I’m the cofounder of Ubicloud (YC W24), an open source alternative to AWS. We're on a mission to rebuild the cloud market with different values. Previously, I was a partner at Microsoft, leading PostgreSQL engineering teams. I came to Microsoft through its acquisition of Citus Data (S11). I was the cofounder and CTO at Citus, and I learned a lot about doing startups there. Before all this, I built distributed systems at Amazon.
I am one of the founders of Ubicloud. I've contributed to a number of control planes from an early phase, starting at Heroku, in what would become Heroku Postgres. Since then, I've serially created new control planes and infrastructure cloud products with some close colleagues, at Citus Cloud and Crunchy Bridge. Ubicloud is the fourth such system.
