## Job description

MorphoAI is a venture-backed deep-tech startup building hardware foundation models for mechanical engineering. Our GPU-accelerated design models that let engineers generate and explore hundreds of complete mechanical assembly designs in minutes, accelerating the invention of new hardware. Our models learns from a company’s prior CAD designs and generates editable assemblies from engineering requirements, incorporating standard and custom components and manufacturing constraints. This enables companies to design and ship the next generation of their hardware faster and better than competition.

We are a 12 person team based between NYC and London, and raised ~$6.3M for our first round. Half our round was through ARIA in the UK (Advanced Research and Invention Agency) to enable the design of dextrous robotic hardware. We work with some of the largest OEMs in the world, including names like ABB, across hardware in power grid, electrical equipment, data centers, consumer and home electronics, industrial manufacturing, and automation and robotics.

Our founding team is built of a prof. of ECE and robotics at Carnegie Mellon, Forbes u30 serial hardware entrepreneur, and a Harvard PhD/ ex. Amazon Robotics scientist and have written 65+ papers between them on algorithms for hardware design. The team at large PhDs from Imperial, TU Wein, UCL and has worked across computational geometry, computer vision, ML, optimization, simulation, and the CAD space.

Member of Technical Staff

About the Role

Morpho is hiring a Research Scientist to develop algorithms for generating and optimizing functional, editable mechanical designs.
The role spans generative design, combinatorial search, and constrained optimization. Core problems include representing mechanical parts and assemblies, exploring discrete design structures, optimizing continuous parameters, and generating diverse designs that satisfy geometric, physical, and manufacturing constraints.
This is an applied research role. The Research Scientist will develop new approaches, build and evaluate working prototypes, and collaborate with engineers to integrate successful methods into Morpho's product.

What We Need

- Strong foundations in one or more of generative modeling, combinatorial optimization, or computational design.
- Ability to formulate ambiguous problems clearly before selecting an algorithmic approach.
- Experience developing and evaluating novel algorithms for complex, structured problems.
- Strong judgment around representations, search strategies, optimization formulations, baselines, and evaluation.
- Ability to build reproducible prototypes that can be integrated into a larger system.
- Clear, concise technical communication and an ability to adapt reasoning as new information emerges.
-   Experience in C++

Useful Experience

- Graph-based representations, graph grammars, program synthesis, or other approaches to structured generation.
- Combinatorial search, learned heuristics, reinforcement learning, or multiobjective optimization.
- Experience with generative methods in the broader 3D space (eg. world models).
- Nonlinear and constrained optimization, differentiable simulation, or inverse design.
- Computational geometry, CAD, or mechanical design.
- Combining machine learning with optimization, search, or simulation.
- Taking research beyond a paper or notebook and into a working product.
