Job Description
Boston Dynamics builds the world’s most exciting robots. Thousands of Spot robots help companies monitor their facilities and keep people out of harm’s way. Stretch is unloading millions of boxes at loading docks around the world. And Atlas is the world’s first production-grade humanoid, with advanced hardware and manipulation capabilities that will transform how warehouses and factories operate. The Interaction Design team designs the user interfaces, human-robot interactions, and next-generation concepts that help Boston Dynamics shape a human-centric future with robots that assist, empower, and inspire.
As a Senior Staff UX Designer on the Interaction Design team, you will be responsible for how users experience our robotics products and software solutions. You will lead major design initiatives across our portfolio: from codifying the look and feel of our robot interactions, to how users author new robot behaviors, to how our customers’ enterprise stakeholders understand and maximize the potential of their Boston Dynamics fleets. You will help us design robots that improve our everyday lives.
In this role you will be responsible for establishing new interaction paradigms that span robot hardware, mixed reality, and responsive 2D interfaces. You will deeply understand stakeholder workflows throughout the robot lifecycle; work collaboratively with product and engineering teams to design cohesive, easy-to-use, and future-facing features; and dive deep with end-users to leverage their feedback. You will generate conceptual models, interface designs, high quality artifacts, and compelling prototypes of end-to-end interactions. Your work will directly contribute to establishing Boston Dynamics as a world leader in robotics product design.
How you will make an impact:
Lead the design of complex user experiences across robotic platforms, including control interfaces, configuration tools, monitoring dashboards, and field service applications.
Translate ambiguous or high-level requirements into cohesive and scalable design strategies and execution plans.
Conduct and lead advanced user research (contextual inquiry, usability studies, and field engagement) to inform product and design decisions.
Collaborate closely with product leadership, engineering teams, and domain experts to drive alignment between user needs, technical architecture, and business objectives.
Define and evolve the design system, interaction models, cross-company HRI profiles, and UI standards for robotic product interfaces.
Advocate for best practices in accessibility, responsive design, safety-critical interaction, and data visualization in hardware/software environments.
Mentor junior and mid-level designers; provide guidance, feedback, and informal leadership on UX craft, processes, and strategy.
Influence cross-functional decisions by presenting compelling evidence and design rationale to senior stakeholders.
Drive process improvements in partner enablement, certification, and technical standards to scale CI program impact globally.
You bring:
Expert proficiency with UX/UI design and prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, InVision, or similar).
Familiarity with “vibe coding” tools like Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or similar.
Deep understanding of human-centered design, interaction architecture, accessibility, and usability testing—especially in complex or high-stakes environments.
Strong portfolio demonstrating advanced design work, including user flows, system-level interface strategy, and HMI design on mobile and desktop platforms (wearables a plus).
Ability to drive discovery, facilitate workshops, and synthesize complex inputs into clear, actionable design strategies.
Strong cross-functional communication skills; capable of influencing across engineering, product, and executive levels.
Action-oriented mindset with a bias towards prototyping and experimentation.
Experience working with or designing for physical hardware interfaces, real-time systems, or industrial environments (preferred).
Travel:
Travel to partner sites and regions of interest will be required (no more than 10%)
Otherwise, this role is expected to be onsite
We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
The salary or hourly pay range for this position will be clearly stated in the job posting as required by Massachusetts law. The base pay range for this position is between $155,000.00– $185,000.00. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience.
