Job Description

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo’s fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Design at Waymo is about the total experience—not just how the product looks, but how it works, how it feels, and how we make our new technology accessible, approachable, and useful for everyone. We design the intuitive, delightful experience for our riders, and we also build the powerful, complex tools used by our fleet operations teams and the engineers who build the Waymo Driver. We are a highly multidisciplinary team of UX Designers, User and Market Researchers, UX Engineers, Content Designers, Industrial Designers, CAD Designers, Studio Engineers, and Technical Artists. We dig deep to understand the attitudes, emotions, and behaviors of all our users. This understanding serves as the foundation for everything we create.

In this hybrid role, you will report to a Senior Staff Technical Writer.

You will:

  • Design, write, edit, and maintain high-quality, clear, and concise documentation for Waymo’s internal engineering and product development teams.
  • Plan, author, and maintain best-in-class internal and partner-facing documentation, including API references.
  • Ensure all documentation adheres to stringent internal safety protocols, regulatory requirements, and industry best practices for a safety-regulated industry.
  • Coordinate and lead content creation efforts across multiple internal teams (Engineering, Product, Business Development, Operations, Legal) to gather accurate, consistent, and timely information.
  • Establish and maintain enterprise-grade standards, policies, and processes for all internal and partner-facing documentation, focusing on security, clarity, and consistency across documentation platforms.
  • Design and develop comprehensive educational materials and training modules (such as code labs, tutorials) to reduce friction in onboarding engineers and partners.

You have:

  • Relevant Writing Experience: 7+ years of dedicated professional experience as a Technical Writer or Content Strategist, with a significant focus on external-facing developer documentation, APIs, and partner ecosystems.
  • API Expertise: Proven ability to document complex technical interfaces, including REST/gRPC APIs, SDKs, and data schemas, with an ability to read and understand source code (PythonC++).
  • Content Management Systems Expertise: Expert proficiency with content management systems, static site generators, and documentation platforms for external publishing; strong grasp of HTML, Markdown, and version control (Perforce, Git).
  • Project Management, Information Architecture, and User Understanding Skills: A track record of solving large, open-ended content problems and leading documentation projects of high complexity and scale, prioritizing user needs to deliver content that moves beyond tactical writing tasks.
  • Stakeholder Alignment Skills: Demonstrated success in navigating complex stakeholder environments (Business, Engineering, Product) to align on content priorities, define requirements, and influence technical designs.
  • Relevant Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Technical Communication, Computer Science, English, or a related field.

We prefer:

  • Mobility Domain Knowledge: Experience in the automotive, transportation-as-a-service (TaaS), or mobility technology sectors.
  • Global/Security Focus: Experience documenting security, segmentation, and compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, regional policies) for global partner rollouts.
  • Data-Driven Strategy: Experience using content analytics (pageviews, search data) and developer experience surveys to measure partner success and drive content roadmap decisions.
  • Content AI Skills: Experience with AI documentation tools, including LLMs, AI driven search, and using AI agents to drive content creation, maintenance, and engagement.
