Job Description

Qumulo's cloud data platform manages exabytes of the world's most demanding data, unifying files, objects, and every workload across edge, core, and cloud.

About the Position:

The Systems Engineer 2 - Platforms is a hybrid systems and application engineering role responsible for hardware platform qualification, sustaining engineering, field hardware escalation support, representing our technical interests with major hardware vendors, and internal platform tooling development.

This is a deeply technical role with direct Sales enablement impact, operates as the primary execution owner of platform initiatives, translating architectural vision into operational reality. Platform accuracy, tooling reliability, and hardware readiness directly influence customer trust and revenue execution. Python automation is a core part of how this work scales.

Responsibilities:

1. Platform Tooling & Application Engineering

  • Design and enhance internal configurators and automation tools used by Sales Engineering and Operations.

  • Own full-stack internal platform development in Python (REST, GraphQL, SQL, JWT).

  • Partner with Sales Engineering on customer sizing consultations, IOPS/performance proofs, and tooling improvements.

2. Platform Qualification & Sustaining

  • Convert Qumulo workload requirements into qualification criteria and interpret benchmark results across enterprise hardware platforms (NVMe, SSD, HDD, NIC, CPU, chassis).

  • Drive component evaluation and platform decisions based on benchmark data and performance analysis.

  • Manage kernel, driver, and firmware lifecycle to ensure stable upgrade paths.

  • Surface hardware-software integration gaps and drive resolution with software engineering.

3. Field Hardware Escalations & Customer Impact

  • Analyze logs, telemetry, and system behavior across hardware and software layers.

  • Identify root cause across firmware, kernel, and distributed system interactions.

  • Engage external vendors and hold vendors accountable.

  • Balance interrupt-driven support with structured engineering execution.

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of experience in enterprise systems engineering, hardware platforms, or infrastructure engineering. Experience in storage systems or distributed file systems would be a bonus.

  • Hands-on experience qualifying server hardware: NVMe, SSDs, HDDs, NICs, CPUs, chassis. Ideally including performance benchmarking experience and the ability to design and interpret workload-driven tests (e.g., iodepth, block size, read/write mix, multi-client scaling)

  • Strong Python proficiency including full-stack development and cloud deployment.

  • Strong Linux systems expertise (log analysis, debugging, performance analysis).

  • Experience with firmware, drivers, kernel-level troubleshooting, or hardware/software integration.

  • Ability to independently manage field escalations and competing priorities.

  • Strong vendor engagement and cross-functional collaboration skills.

The annual pay range for the role is USD $142,000- $182,000 USD

Individual pay depends on various factors, such as role level, relevant experience and skills. Pay ranges are reviewed and typically updated each year. Offers are made within the pay range applicable at the time.

Benefits & Perks:

  • Pre-IPO stock options

  • Flexible time-off policy

  • HSA and PPO health insurance options

  • Dental and Vision insurance

  • 401(k) plan

  • Choice of an ORCA card or parking subsidy

About Qumulo

Modern enterprises have to manage exponentially-growing exabyte-scale data stores comprised mostly of unstructured data. Someone (often IT) has the difficult job of staying on top of managing these data stores, which becomes more difficult to do as enterprise datasets expand from the data center to the edge and cloud. And while scale and complexity are rising, budgets and staff are not. Existing solutions suffer from two crucial shortcomings: Complexity and platform lock-in. Legacy solutions are excruciatingly complex to deploy and manage. And nearly every solution restricts users to running in only the data center and on expensive, inflexible proprietary hardware platforms. Qumulo is the simple way to manage exabyte-scale data anywhere — edge, core, or cloud — on the platform of your choice. In a world with trillions of files and objects comprising 100+ zettabytes worldwide, companies need a solution that combines the ability to work anywhere with simplicity. This is precisely what Qumulo was founded to accomplish.
