Physics | Computer Science internship: GPU acceleration SPARTA modelling

Job Description

Introduction

The Flow Modeling group within the D&E Machine Conditioning – Defectivity & Optics Lifetime (OLT) Solutions department focuses on delivering high-fidelity simulation capabilities to support product performance and risk mitigation. The team leverages advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and multi-physics modeling to address complex challenges related to defectivity, contamination control, and flow-induced effects across ASML platforms.

Your assignment

This project aims to complete the porting of SPARTA DSMC modules to Kokkos to enable full GPU acceleration for internal-flow simulations. While many SPARTA kernels are already GPU-enabled, critical routines for internal flows (e.g. surface-based particle emission such as fix emit/face) are still CPU-only. The internship will focus on identifying these missing components, implementing Kokkos-based GPU kernels, and validating them on representative internal-flow DSMC cases. Enabling these capabilities is essential to efficiently simulate rarefied internal flows relevant to EUV and vacuum systems. This work will significantly expand the applicability of DSMC for large-scale simulations and design optimization.

This is a bachelors non-thesis internship for the duration of 3 months, 5 days a week (3-4 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of September 2026.

Your profile

To be a perfect match for this internship, you:

  • Skilled bachelor or master student in physics, applied mathematics, or engineering

  • Strong proficiency in C++ and git

  • Solid understanding of numerical methods and parallel programming

  • Background in rarefied gas dynamics and CFD is a strong plus

  • Should feel comfortable in approaching experts and arranging support independently.

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

  • Attach your cover letter with a clear motivation why you are interested in this internship assignment in particular;

  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter needs to include the willingness to relocate.

  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
