Mechanical Engineering internship: flow disturbance modelling

Job Description

Introduction

Within ASML, the EUV Source Mechatronics team focuses on the dynamic performance of optical elements in the EUV source module. As an intern in this department you contribute to improving how vibration effects from liquid cooling flows are represented in early design stages. These vibrations can impact system performance, so accurate and efficient modelling methods are essential. This internship gives you the opportunity to combine theory, modelling, and experimental validation. You will work in an innovative environment where your research directly supports system performance improvements.

Your assignment

In this internship you will research and improve methods used to represent flow-induced disturbance forces in structural dynamics models. You will explore ways to simplify early-stage modelling while maintaining sufficient accuracy for performance prediction. Your findings will help define improved ways of working for future designs. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Study existing methods used to tune flow-induced forces within ASML and in literature

  • Analyze limitations of current modelling approaches in early design phases

  • Propose improved methods for representing flow-induced disturbance forces

  • Perform simulations and compare different modelling approaches

  • Validate proposed methods using measurement data

  • Document findings and recommendations in a structured report

  • Present results to stakeholders within the team

This is a master’s thesis internship for minimum 6 months till 9 months , 5 days per week (4 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of September 2026.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a master’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or applied physics

  • Experience with programming/modelling in Matlab.

  • Have a background in Fluid Dynamics and or structural dynamics

  • Have strong analytical skills and a structured way of working

  • Show curiosity and a proactive mindset in research tasks

  • Communicate clearly in English and collaborate effectively in a team

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
