Mechanical Engineering | Industrial Engineering internship: mechanical joining decision guide

Job Description

Introduction

Within ASML’s development environment in Veldhoven, teams design complex products that require reliable mechanical connections. In this internship you will help improve early design choices for joining methods. Many techniques exist, but a clear, structured overview for first selection is missing. You will create guidance that supports designers and suppliers in making informed decisions. This internship contributes to better design quality, lower risk, and improved manufacturability.

Your assignment

In this internship you will analyze mechanical joining techniques and translate your findings into a practical decision guide. You will combine technical research with structured thinking to support early design decisions. The goal is to create a clear and usable guideline that complements existing detailed documentation. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Identify and compare mechanical joining techniques used in industry

  • Map which techniques are covered by existing guidelines and which are not

  • Analyze design impact, including tolerances, processing steps, and product risks

  • Evaluate manufacturability, assembly impact, and supplier feasibility

  • Assess risks, lead times, and process complexity across techniques

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to validate findings and assumptions

  • Develop a structured and user-friendly guideline for early design decisions

This is a bachelor thesis/non-thesis internship for 5/6 months, minimum 3 days per week (1 day on-site). The start date of this internship is as of September 2026.

Yor profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or electro-mechanical engineering

  • Have strong analytical and structured thinking skills

  • Show interest in manufacturing processes and engineering trade-offs

  • Communicate clearly in English, both written and spoken

  • Work proactively, independently, and in collaboration with others

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

  • Attach your cover letter with a clear motivation why you are interested in this internship assignment in particular;

  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter needs to include the willingness to relocate.

  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
