The Technical Principal I for the Engineering department is responsible for providing expert-level technical leadership in materials science and advanced manufacturing of energetics to grow market share, develop new products, and lead the technical execution of complex development programs.
The position reports to the Director for Engineering and is part of the Voyager Energetics Engineering department based in Penrose/Pueblo This role is onsite based in Penrose/Pueblo Colorado. Temporary Hybrid solutions can be explored for suitable candidates.
In this role, the essential functions are:
- Provide engineering leadership as Technical Lead on multiple chemical and energetics development and manufacturing programs, including supervising engineering teams, managing technical execution with program management, maintaining technology roadmaps with risk and mitigation plans, and serving as lead technical reviewer on program reviews.
- Apply materials science and engineering expertise to evaluate and critique propellant formulations, rocket motor designs, and energetics manufacturing plans for performance and risk, and develop new manufacturing tools, methods, and capabilities to expand capacity, increase productivity, and close identified technology gaps.
- Develop and maintain executive, program management, and technical relationships with government and industry customers; present technical and programmatic solutions, lead discussions on future program structures, costs, and contracts, and represent the company at industry briefings, conferences, and reviews.
- Lead white paper and proposal efforts with winning strategies and novel technical approaches, author and review technical documents including reports and test plans, and lead, mentor, and develop technical personnel in advanced energetics and chemical manufacturing — with potential direct management responsibilities.
In this role, the preferred functions are:
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, materials engineering, chemical engineering, or other relevant engineering discipline with 15+ years of experience OR Master’s degree in a relevant discipline with 13+ years of experience OR PhD in a relevant discipline with 10+ years of experience OR 19+ years of relevant industry experience in lieu of a degree.
- 15+ years of industry experience developing novel manufacturing strategies for the development of advanced solid propulsion, warhead, and energetic material technologies.
- 10+ years of experience as a program lead in energetics research and development including fast paced development programs reporting to a program of record or program office, government working groups, and government committees.
- Demonstrated excellence in mentoring junior employees, technical writing, verbal communication, and presenting complex system capabilities to government sponsors and new customers.
Preferred Qualifications (not required):
- Recognized as a solid rocket propellant and manufacturing expert by prime missile integrators.
- Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in chemistry, materials engineering, or chemical engineering from an accredited college or university.

Travel, Physical and/or Government Mandated Requirements:
- Travel up to 25%, including the possibility of overnights, to customer sites, industry conferences, and program reviews.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (requires U.S. Citizenship).
- Candidates must meet all eligibility requirements to obtain and maintain applicable state and federal explosives licenses, including minimum age requirements (21 and over), a drug-free workplace in compliance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 (41 U.S.C. §§ 8101–8106), Executive Order 12564 (Drug-Free Federal Workplace), applicable Department of Defense directives including DoD Instruction 1010.09 and DFARS 252.226-7003 and successful completion of any legally required background investigations.
- To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
The good faith base salary range for this role is $215,000 - $235,000 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future. This position is incentive plan eligible.
