This role requires deep marine diesel expertise, independent diagnostic capability, and the ability to own complex maintenance outcomes in operational environments. The ideal candidate brings a decade or more of hands-on experience working on boats and marine propulsion systems, is comfortable operating without supervision, and is ready to serve as a technical lead and mentor to junior technicians on the team.
Responsibilities
• Serve as the technical authority for diesel engine maintenance, diagnostics, and repair on ASV platforms.
• Independently diagnose and resolve complex diesel engine malfunctions, mechanical failures, and electrical faults, including unfamiliar or first-of-kind failure modes.
• Lead overhaul, rebuild, and restoration of diesel engines and associated systems including fuel injection, turbochargers, cooling, and exhaust.
• Perform and oversee routine maintenance tasks including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and scheduled PM activities.
• Utilize OEM diagnostic tooling (Volvo VODIA or equivalent) and other diagnostic equipment to conduct system-level assessments and repairs.
• Develop, refine, and validate maintenance procedures; identify gaps and recommend improvements based on field experience.
• Maintain accurate and detailed records of all maintenance and repair activities in compliance with quality and regulatory requirements.
• Mentor and provide technical guidance to Diesel Technicians; review work quality and support professional development.
• Serve as the primary technical interface during field deployments, customer engagements, and cross-functional coordination.
• Follow and enforce safety protocols for diesel engines and hazardous materials handling; promote a strong safety culture on the team.
Qualifications
• 10+ years of hands-on experience as a diesel technician, with significant time in marine environments.
• Marine diesel and/or Volvo VODIA experience strongly preferred; equivalent OEM diagnostic platform experience considered.
• Proven track record of independently diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and related propulsion, fuel, cooling, and exhaust systems.
• Expert-level proficiency in electrical troubleshooting including complex, multi-system fault isolation.
• Demonstrated experience with engine teardown, rebuild, and overhaul; this is a core expectation of the role.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and schematics with minimal supervision.
• Experience in maritime, defense, commercial offshore, or regulated operational environments preferred.
• Familiarity with quality management systems including work order management, compliance documentation, and parts accountability.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; comfortable interfacing with customers, operators, and engineering teams.
• Ability to lead technically in dynamic, field-based environments with limited support infrastructure.
• Ability to travel as needed to support field operations and deployments.
Physical Demands
• Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods, up to 12 hours/day.
• Frequently and repetitively lift, push, and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in marine and waterside environments.
• Frequently and repetitively bend, lift, and reach to install and remove components of varying size and weight.
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, including over varied and uneven terrain such as docks, vessel decks, and gravel surfaces.
• Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist, and crawl for extended periods while working in confined or low-clearance spaces.
• Climb and maintain balance on ladders, platforms, vessels, and other elevated structures.
• Exposure to loud noise, vibration, engine exhaust, and hazardous materials with required adherence to safety and disposal procedures.
• Wear Personal Protective Equipment at all times in work areas, including safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, steel-toed footwear, and other PPE as required.
