Mission Software Engineer

Compensation
$100,000–$150,000/year

Job Description

Mission Software Engineers (MSEs) at EffiGov lead deployments in local governments across the nation. You will embed with city and county employees, where resources are scarce and a mistake could mean your customer doesn’t get elected next cycle. You’ll map out their problems, adjust plans on the fly, and ship fast. You’ll learn to be relentlessly resourceful, leveraging the EffiGov platform, off the shelf technologies, and your own hacking abilities to solve customer problems.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. This role will be in-person 5 days a week, with up to two-thirds of time dedicated towards on-site deployment work with customers.

About the Team

EffiGov is a technology company dedicated to improving the way our cities work. Our team combines expertise in AI with a long track record of civil service. We believe that the most foundational institutions in our country—local governments that provide critical services to millions of Americans every day—are severely underserved by current AI technology and distribution, and we work every day to change that.

What You’ll Do:

  • Own delivery across multiple government deployments, from first prototype to stable production.
  • Deeply embed with customers to configure EffiGov for their pain points.
  • Prototype and build full-stack systems using Python, TypeScript, and other technologies.
  • Guide customers on maximizing usage and operational value from their applications.
  • Cultivate relationships with customer leadership and stakeholders, pushing through organizational obstacles that technology alone can’t fix.
  • Codify working patterns into scripts, runbooks, and modules others can use.
  • Ship code directly into our platform when necessary.
  • Share on-site feedback with the product team to guide future development

You Should Be:

  • Comfortable with rapid iteration cycles while maintaining a high quality bar.
  • Able to communicate complex ideas clearly.
  • Highly empathetic.
  • Excited by the entire loop of 1) talking to users, 2) drilling down into their exact problems, 3) building the best solution to solve it, and 4) iterating based on their feedback.
  • Experienced with LLMs (voice AI nice to have), through projects, internships, or full-time roles.
  • A graduate from or in the final semester of a quantitative degree program (CS, math, statistics, physics, engineering) - minor OK if you have technical internship experience
  • Bonuses: Hackathon wins, personal projects with real users, humanities minor or double major, published written work, policy or government experience.

What’s at stake

We help our customers provide essential city services that residents depend on. Each deployment presents new challenges, from closed-off legacy software, to unaligned stakeholders, to variations in end-user populations. We take these challenges in stride because the mission is too important to delay. If you want to work alongside the most driven individuals in AI and government, this is the place for you.

Interview Process

  1. 30-minute chat with Aden
  2. 30-minute chat with Aubteen
  3. 3 hr take-home challenge
  4. Paid on-site work trial
