About the Role, Department, Team, and Project

We are seeking a Chief Engineer (f/m/d) to spearhead the comprehensive design, development, and validation & verification (V&V) of satellite systems for an upcoming large-scale satellite telecommunications program in Germany. In this pivotal role, your initial focus is on satellite architecture and design specifications for the entire space segment, derived from customer and user requirements.

You are responsible for all engineering contributions and will lead the satellite systems engineering team across different sites. Functionally contributing to the transnational satellite team based in Toulouse, you will enable a strong footprint in Germany for national applications. The technical spectrum covers the entire satellite system with a strong product mindset, requiring deep understanding of RF and optical payloads, LEO satellite systems, telecommunication, and data transmission protocols.

Your Tasks and Responsibilities

• End-to-End Architecture & Technical Leadership: Lead as national focal point the E2E satellite architecture, design, and specification for the entire program life cycle (Phases 0/A to E). Define technical specifications, engineering deliverables, technical WBS, and schedules structured for industrial execution.

• CONOPS & Systems Engineering: Support the customer with Satellite CONOPS, E2E Satellite Performance, and V/V strategies. Translate customer/RFP requirements into efficient architectures, define payload mission/operational concepts, perform structured trade-offs, and maintain system performance budgets.

• Project & Risk Management: Manage technical definition, deliverables, schedule, cost, quality, and technical risk management up to final customer acceptance. Approve engineering resource budgets, ensure resource availability, and manage technology development plans for key technologies.

• Industrial & Stakeholder Interface: Serve as the technical point of contact for industrial partners to enable optimized design solutions. Coordinate interfaces across Space, Ground, Launch, and User segments. Ensure safety review requirements are met.

• Process Adaptation & Support: Adapt standard product development processes to be lean (with CTO agreement). Support industrialization, production, integrated logistics, and continuous safe operations.

• Travel: Willingness to undertake business travel approximately twice per month within Germany/Europe.

Required Knowledge and Qualifications

Hard Skills:

• Education & Experience: University degree in Engineering with 10+ years of professional experience (in-depth space knowledge required), including 5 to 8 years of dedicated experience in Systems Engineering.

• Domain Expertise: Proven experience with optical/RF communication satellite payloads, LEO satellite constellations, and space mission design/V&V in Phase B/C/D projects. System Lifecycle experience (Phases 0/A to E).

• Standards & Compliance: Solid knowledge of ECSS standards (especially engineering standards). Experience with military customers, government authorities, and export control regulations (EAR, ITAR).

• Engineering Tools & Methods: Proficiency in DOORS, MS Office/Google Workspace. Experience with CAMEO, MOFLT, and Matlab is desirable. Familiarity with MBSE, VPM (Visual Performance Management), Obeya, and AI applications is advantageous.

• Languages: C1-level English and C1-level German are mandatory.

Soft Skills:

• Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage complex engineering projects (understanding of the AIRBUS Leadership Model).

• Excellent presentation, rhetoric, and argumentation skills for complex technical contexts.

• High degree of creativity, decision-making capability, open-mindedness, and strong collaborative team skills.

Deine Aufgaben und Verantwortlichkeiten

• End-to-End Architektur & Technische Leitung: Steuerung der E2E-Satellitenarchitektur, des Designs und der Spezifikationen über den gesamten Lebenszyklus (Phasen 0/A bis E) als nationaler Hauptansprechpartner (Focal Point). Definition strukturierter technischer Spezifikationen, Projektstrukturpläne (WBS) und Entwicklungszeitpläne.

• CONOPS & Systems Engineering: Unterstützung des Kunden beim Satelliten-CONOPS sowie der E2E-Performance- und V/V-Strategie. Übersetzung von Kunden-/RFP-Anforderungen in machbare Architekturen, Definition von Nutzlast-Missions- und Betriebskonzepten, Durchführung methodischer Trade-offs und Pflege der Systemleistungsbudgets.

• Projekt- & Risikomanagement: Steuerung der technischen Definition, der Engineering-Ergebnisse, des Zeitplans, der Kosten, der Qualität und der Risiken bis zur endgültigen Kundenabnahme. Freigabe von Engineering-Budgets, Ressourcenüberwachung sowie Ausarbeitung von Entwicklungsplänen für Schlüsseltechnologien.

• Industrie- & Stakeholder-Schnittstelle: Technischer Ansprechpartner für Industriepartner zur Realisierung industriell optimierter Designlösungen. Koordination der Schnittstellen zwischen Weltraum-, Boden-, Start- und Nutzersegmenten sowie Sicherstellung der Anforderungen für Safety Reviews.

• Prozessanpassung & Unterstützung: Lean-Anpassung von Standard-Produktentwicklungsprozessen (in Abstimmung mit dem CTO). Unterstützung von Industrialisierung, Produktion, Logistik und Kundensupport sowie Gewährleistung eines sicheren Betriebs.

• Reisebereitschaft: Bereitschaft zu Dienstreisen innerhalb Deutschlands und Europas (ca. zweimal pro Monat).

Erforderliche Kenntnisse und Qualifikationen

Fachliche Anforderungen (Hard Skills):

• Ausbildung & Erfahrung: Abgeschlossenes Ingenieurstudium und mehr als 10 Jahre Berufserfahrung (fundierte Raumfahrtkenntnisse erforderlich), davon 5 bis 8 Jahre gezielte Erfahrung im Systems Engineering.

• Domänenkompetenz: Erfahrung mit optischen/HF-Kommunikationssatelliten-Nutzlasten, LEO-Konstellationen sowie Design, Analyse und V&V von Weltraummissionen in den Phasen B/C/D. Erfahrung in den Lebenszyklusphasen 0/A bis E.

• Standards & Compliance: Fundierte Kenntnisse der ECSS-Engineering-Standards. Erfahrung im Umgang mit militärischen Kunden, Behörden sowie in der Exportkontrolle (EAR, ITAR etc.).

• Software & Methoden: Sicherer Umgang mit DOORS, Office-Tools und Google Workspace. Erfahrung mit CAMEO, MOFLT sowie Matlab wünschenswert. Kenntnisse in MBSE, VPM (Visual Performance Management), Obeya und KI-Anwendungen von Vorteil.

• Sprachkenntnisse: Deutsch auf C1-Niveau und Englisch auf C1-Niveau sind zwingend erforderlich.
