Northrop Grumman's summer internship program is one of the largest in the defense industry, taking over 3,000 interns across engineering, IT, business, and operations roles each year. If you're a college student interested in aerospace and defense — particularly in programs like the B-21 Raider, Sentinel ICBM, or space systems — NG's internship pipeline is one of the best ways in.

This guide covers everything from pay rates and application timing to what you'll actually work on and how to convert to full-time.

Internship pay by degree level

Degree LevelHourly Rate12-Week GrossNotes
Freshman/Sophomore$22–$25$10,500–$12,000Limited positions available
Junior/Senior (BS)$25–$30$12,000–$14,400Most common intern level
Master's$30–$35$14,400–$16,800More specialized project assignments
PhD$35–$38$16,800–$18,200Research-oriented roles

These rates are competitive with other major defense contractors. For comparison: Lockheed Martin interns earn $22–$40/hr and Boeing interns earn $24–$42/hr. NG's rates are slightly below Boeing's at the MS/PhD level but comparable at the BS level.

Additional compensation

  • Housing stipend: $2,500–$4,500 for the summer term (varies by location and distance from home university)
  • Relocation assistance: Provided for interns moving more than 50 miles
  • 9/80 schedule: Many NG sites offer every other Friday off, giving you 26 three-day weekends per year
  • Employee discount programs: Access to NG's corporate discount portal during your internship

Internship types

Direct internship

The standard summer internship. You're assigned to a specific team and project within one of NG's four sectors: Aeronautics Systems, Defense Systems, Mission Systems, or Space Systems. Your work contributes to a real program, and your manager evaluates you for potential full-time conversion.

ECDP (Engineering and Computer Development Program)

NG's premier early career rotational program. While technically a full-time program for new graduates, ECDP recruits heavily from the intern pool. Performing well as a summer intern is the primary path into ECDP. The program offers 2 years of rotational assignments (3 rotations) across different engineering teams within the same sector. See our full Northrop Grumman early careers guide for details.

Co-op

Alternating semesters of work and school, typically 3-4 rotations over 2 years. Co-ops build deeper relationships with their teams and have even higher conversion rates than summer interns. Available at sites near major universities.

What you'll actually work on

Northrop Grumman interns work on real programs — not busywork. Depending on your site and sector, you might work on:

Aeronautics Systems (Palmdale CA, Melbourne FL)

  • B-21 Raider: The Air Force's next-generation stealth bomber. Highly classified, but interns with interim clearances can contribute to unclassified subsystems, testing, and manufacturing engineering
  • E-2D Advanced Hawkeye: Airborne early warning system for the Navy
  • Autonomous systems: MQ-4C Triton and next-generation unmanned platforms

Defense Systems (various)

  • Sentinel ICBM: Ground-based strategic deterrent replacing Minuteman III — NG's largest development program
  • IBCS: Integrated Battle Command System for the Army
  • Ammunition and energetics: Ordnance production and development

Mission Systems (Linthicum MD, San Diego CA, Woodland Hills CA)

  • Navigation systems: Inertial navigation units, GPS receivers
  • Electronic warfare: Threat detection and countermeasures
  • Cybersecurity: Network defense, secure communications
  • Radar and sensors: AESA arrays, space-based sensors

Space Systems (Redondo Beach CA, Dulles VA, Gilbert AZ)

  • Satellite buses: GEO communications, missile warning
  • Space vehicles: Cygnus cargo spacecraft (ISS resupply)
  • James Webb heritage: Instruments and optics for future space telescopes
  • SDA satellites: Proliferated LEO constellation for missile tracking
Classified vs. unclassified work

Many NG programs are classified, meaning interns need at least an interim Secret clearance to fully participate. NG initiates the clearance process when you accept your offer, but interim clearances typically take 2-4 months. If your clearance isn't ready by your start date, you'll work on unclassified tasks initially. Being clearance-eligible (US citizen, no disqualifying background issues) is essential — NG cannot hire non-US citizens for most intern positions.

Application timeline

The internship recruiting cycle follows a predictable pattern. Applying early is critical — positions fill on a rolling basis.

MonthActivityAction Item
AugustApplications open on NG careers portalSubmit applications early — first wave of reviews starts immediately
September–OctoberCampus career fairs, peak recruitingAttend NG info sessions, hand resume to recruiters, follow up
NovemberFirst round of interviewsPrepare STAR stories, review NG programs relevant to your role

February–MarchSecond wave of interviews (remaining positions)Apply to positions that haven't filled if you missed the first wave
May–JuneSummer internships beginComplete onboarding, security paperwork, begin project

The interview process

NG's internship interviews typically involve two rounds:

Round 1: Behavioral interview (30-45 minutes) A recruiter or hiring manager asks STAR-format questions: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Common themes include teamwork, overcoming challenges, leadership, and time management. Have 4-5 prepared stories that demonstrate these competencies.

Round 2: Technical interview (30-60 minutes) A senior engineer evaluates your technical depth. For engineering roles, expect questions about your coursework, projects, and problem-solving approach. This isn't algorithmic coding interviews — it's more conversational: "Tell me about your senior design project," "How would you approach thermal analysis of this component," "What was the hardest bug you debugged?"

Interview preparation

Research the specific NG programs at the site you're interviewing for. If you're interviewing for a Space Systems role in Redondo Beach, know what satellites they build there. If it's Aeronautics in Palmdale, know the B-21 exists (even if details are classified). Demonstrating genuine interest in the company's mission — not just "I need an internship" — is what separates competitive candidates.

Converting to full-time

Approximately 55% of NG interns receive and accept full-time return offers. The conversion decision is based on:

  1. Manager evaluation: Your direct supervisor rates your technical contribution, initiative, and teamwork
  2. Project deliverables: Did you complete your assigned work? Did you present at the end-of-summer showcase?
  3. Business need: Hiring depends on program funding and headcount availability
  4. Clearance eligibility: If you can't obtain a clearance, most positions aren't available

Full-time offers for graduating interns typically start at the D1 pay grade (see our Northrop Grumman D1 guide): $72K–$88K base depending on discipline and location, plus a $5K–$10K signing bonus.

Increasing your conversion odds

  • Ask for feedback regularly — don't wait for the end-of-summer review
  • Volunteer for extra work — show initiative beyond your assigned project
  • Network across teams — attend intern events, meet engineers from other programs
  • Present well — the end-of-summer presentation is your audition for full-time
  • Express interest clearly — tell your manager and recruiter that you want to return
