Job Description
About Wasmer
Wasmer is building the universal execution layer for software and AI.
Developers should be able to run any application, AI agent, or generated code instantly, securely, and anywhere. Without relying on containers, virtual machines, or cloud-specific infrastructure.
We use WebAssembly and WASIX to create lightweight, sandboxed environments with:
- Strong isolation
- Near-native performance
- Near-instant cold starts
- Portability across local machines, servers, browsers, and the edge
For Summer 2027, we are looking for infrastructure engineering interns to help us build this system.
You will work on the infrastructure required to safely execute millions of applications and AI workloads, including runtime internals, distributed scheduling, networking, storage, snapshotting, observability, security, language compatibility, and developer tooling.
This is not a typical application development internship.
You will work close to the operating system, runtime, compiler, and distributed systems layers, solving problems normally handled by container runtimes, serverless platforms, cloud providers, and hyperscale infrastructure teams.
What You Might Work On
- Improve the Wasmer runtime and WASIX system interfaces
- Build secure sandboxes for untrusted and AI-generated code
- Reduce application cold starts through memory snapshots and runtime optimizations
- Design distributed scheduling and workload-placement systems
- Build networking primitives for isolated applications and AI agents
- Improve language and framework compatibility
- Build observability and debugging tools for distributed workloads
- Optimize storage and virtual filesystem performance
Interns at Wasmer own meaningful infrastructure projects from design through production deployment.
The goal is not to create an isolated intern project. The goal is to ship systems that become part of Wasmer’s core platform.
Tech
Our stack includes:
- Rust, C, and C++
- WebAssembly, WASI, and WASIX
- Linux and systems programming
- Distributed systems and networking
- Compilers and language runtimes
- Virtual filesystems and object storage
- Python and TypeScript
- PostgreSQL
- Edge infrastructure
- Observability systems
You do not need to know every technology before joining.
You should be excited to work at the boundary between operating systems, runtimes, distributed computing, and AI infrastructure.
What We Are Looking For
You should be comfortable with, or eager to quickly learn:
- Rust and systems programming
- Operating system fundamentals, including processes, memory, filesystems, and networking
- WebAssembly, WASI, compilers, or language runtimes
- Distributed systems and cloud infrastructure
- Performance profiling and low-level debugging
- Multi-tenant security and sandboxed execution
- Building reliable production systems
- Reading and contributing to large, unfamiliar codebases
The strongest candidates are curious, learn quickly, and enjoy understanding systems from the ground up.
Who This Is For
This internship is for engineers who want to build the infrastructure beneath modern software.
You may be a strong fit if you have built or contributed to:
- Compilers
- Databases
- Operating systems
- Language runtimes
- Distributed systems
- Developer tools
- Infrastructure projects
- Other technically ambitious systems
We care more about technical depth, curiosity, and your ability to build than formal experience or credentials.
Why Wasmer
AI is changing how software is created, but that software still needs a safe, reliable place to run.
Wasmer is building that execution layer.
Instead of relying on heavy virtual machines or containers, we use WebAssembly to create fast, secure, and portable environments that can run anywhere.
As a Summer 2027 intern, you will help build what comes after containers and serverless computing.
