Indirect Tax Technology Manager

Compensation
$162,000–$180,000/year

Job Description

About the Team

OpenAI Finance is responsible for ensuring the organization is set up for success in pursuit of its mission.

OpenAI’s Tax and Trade team sits at the center of OpenAI’s global growth—shaping how cutting-edge AI products, partnerships, and infrastructure scale across borders while navigating complex tax, trade, and regulatory regimes. We operate as strategic operators, not just compliance experts, embedding early in product, finance, policy, and infrastructure decisions to manage risk, unlock incentives, and enable OpenAI to grow responsibly and competitively worldwide.

As OpenAI’s products, monetization models, and global infrastructure expand, our tax systems must scale with the same rigor and reliability as our product architecture. The team partners deeply with Financial Engineering, Product Engineering, and Finance Systems to build a modern tax technology stack that enables accurate, real-time tax determination across OpenAI’s global business.

About the Role

We’re hiring an Indirect Tax Technology Manager to support the ongoing configuration, maintenance, and operational management of OpenAI’s indirect tax technology environment.

This role will focus on maintaining and enhancing indirect tax systems and workflows across billing, invoicing, ERP, and checkout processes to support OpenAI’s rapidly growing global business. The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing day-to-day tax engine operations, supporting system implementations, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring reliable tax determination across indirect tax processes.

You will work closely with Tax, Financial Engineering, Product Engineering, and Finance Systems teams to support tax configurations, monitor tax data flows, execute testing, and maintain system accuracy across OpenAI’s global products and jurisdictions. This role is focused on operational excellence, scalability, and maintaining stable tax processes as the business evolves.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA, and we use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week.

In this role, you will:

  • Support the day-to-day administration and maintenance of Vertex and related indirect tax systems.

  • Maintain tax determination logic, product mappings, jurisdiction rules, and exemption configurations across billing and invoicing systems.

  • Support indirect tax flows across checkout, billing, ERP, and financial reporting systems.

  • Monitor tax engine performance and troubleshoot tax calculation or integration issues across systems.

  • Coordinate tax engine updates, patches, and configuration changes in partnership with internal teams and external vendors.

  • Execute testing activities including regression, integration, and user acceptance testing for tax-related system changes.

  • Support onboarding of new products, entities, and jurisdictions into existing tax processes and systems.

  • Assist with reconciliation processes between tax engine outputs, billing systems, and ERP reporting.

  • Maintain documentation, process flows, operational procedures, and system support playbooks for indirect tax operations.

  • Partner with Financial Engineering, Product Engineering, and Finance Systems teams to support tax-related integrations and data requirements.

  • Support indirect tax audits by assisting with transaction-level data gathering, reconciliations, and system documentation.

  • Help identify process improvement opportunities to enhance automation, controls, and operational efficiency within indirect tax systems.

You might thrive in this role if you have:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience supporting indirect tax technology, tax engines, or ERP-related tax processes.

  • Experience working with enterprise tax engines such as Vertex or OneSource.

  • Familiarity with indirect tax processes across billing, invoicing, ERP, and financial systems.

  • Experience supporting tax system configurations, product mappings, taxability rules, and exemption management.

  • Ability to troubleshoot system and tax calculation issues across multiple platforms and integrations.

  • Experience executing testing and supporting system implementations or enhancements.

  • Familiarity with Oracle, NetSuite, Stripe, or similar financial and billing platforms.

  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and process documentation.

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with Tax, Engineering, Finance, and external vendors.

Compensation Range: $162K - $180K USD
