What we are looking for

Aurora hires talented people with diverse backgrounds who are ready to help build a transportation ecosystem that will make our roads safer, get crucial goods where they need to go, and make mobility more efficient and accessible for all. We’re searching for a Assistant Risk Manager. Reporting to the Sr. Director, Business Risk & Insurance, the Assistant Risk Manager (Insurance Focus) is responsible for the strategic oversight and tactical execution of Aurora’s corporate insurance programs. This role serves as a critical lead in identifying, assessing, and mitigating operational and financial risk exposures to safeguard company assets and ensure long-term stability. The Manager will drive the policy renewal process, manage complex claims portfolios, and leverage advanced quantitative models to optimize risk financing strategies.

In this role, you will

  • Insurance Strategy & Program Management: Lead the comprehensive life cycle of corporate insurance placements (e.g., General Liability, Property, Auto, Workers' Compensation, and D&O), including strategy development, broker management, and premium negotiation.
  • Quantitative Risk Modeling: Oversee the development and validation of sophisticated risk models—including exposure analysis, catastrophe modeling, and loss data statistics—to drive data-backed decisions on risk retention and transfer.
  • Risk Assessment & Identification: Conduct regular enterprise-wide operational audits to identify emerging risks, performing detailed financial projections to recommend optimized risk control solutions.
  • Claims Management & Advocacy: Direct the investigation and management of high-exposure insurance claims, acting as the primary advocate for the company in negotiations with brokers and carriers to ensure favorable settlements.
  • Corporate Compliance & Governance: Develop, maintain, and audit the corporate Risk Management Manual, ensuring all procedures comply with evolving safety regulations and internal governance standards.
  • Strategic Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with executive leadership across Legal, Finance, and Operations to align risk strategies with commercial milestones and promote enterprise-wide loss prevention initiatives.
  • AI Integration for Risk: Pioneer the use of AI-driven tools and agentic workflows to accelerate claims processing, automate routine risk reporting, and improve the accuracy of predictive cost modeling.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Risk Management, Finance, Business, or a related quantitative field.
  • Minimum 8+ years of progressive experience in corporate risk management, insurance brokerage, or underwriting.
  • Advanced mastery of insurance principles, complex policy language, and alternative risk financing structures (e.g., captives or large deductible programs).
  • Expert proficiency in Risk Management Information Systems (RMIS) and advanced data visualization tools. Demonstrable ability to create and interpret complex financial models.
  • Strong track record of successfully negotiating with major global insurers and communicating high-level risk concepts to executive stakeholders.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Python, SQL, or AI-powered analytical platforms.
  • Professional designations such as CRM (Certified Risk Manager), ARM (Associate in Risk Management), or CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter).
  • Prior experience in the Autonomous Vehicle (AV), technology, or logistics/trucking sectors is highly preferred.

The base salary range for this position is $147,000-$236,000 per year.  Aurora’s pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future. The successful candidate will also be eligible for an annual bonus, equity compensation, and benefits.
